As part of Dr. Sara Davison’s research team, the Research Manager will work independently with minimal supervision to help manage the direction of the research, and maximize academic output and clinical impact. This position will be responsible for program, project and staff management, as well as being a methodology expert in quantitative data analysis. 

Duties include but are not limited to:

Program Management

  • Contributes to the direction of the research program
  • Helps set research program objectives and strategic planning in close collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI)
  • Co-leads, educates and oversees the complex research methodology decisions of the research program
  • Participates in brainstorming sessions for planning current and new collaborative research
  • Performs environmental scans to identify research and funding opportunities
  • Writes grant proposals and applies for funding including research design for new/proposed research initiatives and developing study protocols
  • Responsible for organizational design (staff and equipment) to meet the needs of the ensuing grants, contracts and projects
  • Oversees funded projects and managing research projects including ethics preparation and submission (initial and annual updates)
  • Oversees project implementation including adherence to proposed timeliness for recruitment, data collection, and data entry and analysis; overseeing budgets administrative requirements of research projects to ensure compliance with granting agencies and the University of Alberta (Research Services Office) policies and procedure
  • Assists in the development and coordination of scientific collaboration with researchers within and outside the University, both nationally and internationally; networks with on- and off-site scientific and technical experts/organizations
  • Develops and carries out independent research; troubleshoots experimental protocols


Methodology expert in quantitative data analysis

  • Develops data creation and analytic plans
  • Develops procedures for data validation
  • Leads in the statistical components of studies (both meta-analyses and clinical trials, including pragmatic clinical trials) using administrative and clinical data
  • Collaborates in the methodological design of studies
  • Develops advanced statistical elements of grant proposals and contracts: drafts and/or critically revises appropriate proposal sections e.g., creates budgets, sample size calculations, statistical methods and study design
  • Provides input to manuscripts, reports, and presentations: drafts and/or critically revises methodology and results sections, prepares tables and graphs, critically reviews conclusions and other elements of the document and assists in the preparation in other aspects as required
  • Provides and/or develops workshops and seminars as required


Staff Management

  • Manages staff scientists, study coordinators, research assistants and contractors
  • Responsible for position descriptions, staff recruitment, selection and contracts, education and development, evaluation, discipline and recommendations for promotion and termination


Project Management

  • Responsible for data management: collaborates on the specifications of the design of the database and the data elements, merges and cleans datasets and provides input into additional data requirements and restrictions
  • Responsible for statistical and economic analyses: designs and implements statistical procedures; performs other research and administrative duties as required


Qualifications:

  • Clinical epidemiology with a PhD in Public Health or related field required
  • Minimum 3-5 years research experience
  • Palliative care experience would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated track record in research grant management and in grant securement and publications
  • Excellent working knowledge of research methodology and statistics
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
  • Basic to intermediate budgeting skills and financial forecasting
  • Proven ability to effectively lead research teams
  • Demonstrated ability to educate, manage, supervise, and recruit scientific personnel (including provision of constructive feedback)
  • Proven ability to perform human resources functions including preparation of job description, interviewing, and performance reviews
  • Strong facilitation, negotiation and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently

 

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff (TRAS) agreement, this position has an initial appointment of two years, with the possibility of extension, offers a comprehensive benefits plan found at www.hrs.ualberta.ca and an annual salary range of $55,943 to $76,931. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
