The Director of Clinical Research will serve to identify opportunities and provide support to help realize the Faculty's strategic goals in clinical and health outcomes research. This area of research represents a growth area for research revenue for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD); additional staff resources are required for this to happen. In addition, the director will provide expert 'navigational' support to faculty for all clinical research support resources within and external to the Faculty.

The Director will communicate with stakeholders and maintain a current directory of clinical research support resources. In addition, he/she will provide advisory support to Faculty members in the development and implementation of clinical research activities as well as develop new support resources as needed.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provides operational leadership in matters related to clinical research for the Office of Research
  • Develops and implements a framework to better coordinate existing and new support resources in clinical research across the Faculty as well as the provincial landscape
  • Develops new resources to help support clinical and health outcomes research faculty including, but not limited to new core support resources like biostatistics, training opportunities,  on-boarding orientation for new faculty, knowledge repositories, website content, and facilitating collaboration between investigators
  • Leads the development of new clinical research support resources like a Biostastics Core or Bioinformatics Core; this will eventually require direct operational leadership and management of staff
  • Develops partnerships with institutes, centers and existing research groups
  • Develops strategic business plans with a focus on cost recovery
  • Plans and implements activities (e.g. seminars), initiatives (e.g. planning for a major grant application), or new resources (e.g. website content) to support or enhance clinical and health outcomes research in the FoMD
  • Provides leadership in the development of programs for the provision of training in health ethics, patient confidentiality and secure data
  • Provides operational leadership on Faculty committees as well as with regional (e.g. NACTRC) or provincial (e.g. AHS Research Administration) stakeholder groups
  • Creates a comprehensive database of clinical and health outcomes researchers to facilitate communication and planning, as well as support resources in the University and province
  • Creates and manages partnerships with stakeholders including but not limited to Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services Research, Innovation, and Analytics; Alberta Innovates Health Solutions including the Alberta SPOR SUPPORT Unit and Alberta Clinical Research Consortium, the Northern Alberta Clinical Trials Research Center (NACTRC); the Grant Assist Program and the Office of Quality Management in Clinical Research at the University of Alberta
  • Communicates and coordinates with NACTRC on a regular basis for all related activities and plans new initiatives relevant to the Office of Research and goals of the FoMD
  • Supports grant competitions admistered by the Office of Research and identifies, nominates or links individual faculty or groups with grant opportunities and/or awards
  • Provides 'navigational' support to faculty,particularly for new faculty, in the development and implementation of clinical or health outcomes research activities
  • Ensures the alignment of initiatives among internal (e.g. research institutes) and external stakeholders (e.g. Alberta Clinical Research Consortium, SPOR SUPORT Unit platform) to avoid duplication and leverage existing resources.
  • Contributes to the development of a communication strategy to promote collaboration among faculty members, research institutes and other faculties
  • Supports the enhancement of research quality within the FoMD in collaboration with the Office of Quality Management in Clinical Research
  • Collaborates closely with the Northern Alberta Clinical Trials Research Center (NACTRC) as a partner and revenue source in identifying and developing core support needs
