At the Centre of Excellence, Centre for Intervention Sciences in Maternal and Child Health (www.CISMAC.org), a full-time (100 %) position as PhD Fellowship is available for a period of four (4) years from 1st of July, 2016or max 4 months after completed the PhD-degree, if this is achieved within a shorter time than four years. The position will mainly be linked to the CISMAC Study ”Zinc as an adjunct for the treatment of Clinical severe infection in infants younger than 2 months” but we may encourage the candidate to also work in other CISMAC studies in Nepal and in Uganda. The position is financed by the University of Bergen.

The Fellow will be employed at the Centre for International Health, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, University of Bergen but will work for a considerable time in The Netherlands, Nepal, and India with possibly shorter stays in Uganda. The position include up to 25% duty work such as teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the demands at the department.

 

About CISMAC

CISMAC (www.CISMAC.org ) is a Centre of Excellence by the Research Council of Norway and is anchored at the Centre for International Health at the University of Bergen, Norway. It is an international consortium with research institutions in Ethiopia, India, Nepal, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Norway. CISMAC undertakes large trials on innovative interventions addressing the continuum of maternal and child health (MNCH) care to generate evidence on how to effectively and equitably enhance MNCH and child development. The studies estimate the efficacy, effectiveness, cost-effectiveness as well as equity impact and contextual factors of the interventions.

 

Projects

The main focus of the two Studies in which the PhD fellow will work and undertake his/her research is to estimate the immunobiological effects of supplementing young infants daily with zinc (India and Nepal) and estimate such effects of delaying BCG vaccination to 14 weeks of age in HIV exposed infants (Uganda).

 

Position

The main objectives for the position is to contribute scientifically to the above-mentioned Studies, ensuring that they are undertaken with the appropriate rigor, generate excellent scientific output, and foster his/her academic development and career.

Qualifications and qualities

The successful applicant must hold a Masters degree within the field of immunology (or cell biology) or a degree in Medicine or Dentistry.

 

Experience from or convincing interest in working in low- and middle income countries will be considered as an advantage, as the candidate is expected to contribute to establish relevant immunological methods in collaborating institutions.

 

Personal skills will be emphasized, and potential experience from relevant research projects will be considered as positive. The candidate should be able to work independently and have a strong commitment and enthusiasm for research. Experience from or convincing interest in working in low- and middle income countries will be considered as an advantage. The successful applicant must be fluent in oral and written English.

 

The PhD-position

The candidate must take part in the University`s approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 4 years.

 

You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement

 

PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or had similar employment at an institution in the region.

  • Salary in accordance with level 50 (code 1017/L20) on the government salary scale (corresponding to NOK 429.700 per year). Further increases in salary will be based on seniority in the position. For applicants who have completed their internships, salary level 52. Medical specialist start on wage level 58 (code 1017/LR20-15).
