Job Details

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Bergen is inviting applications for a 3-year PhD fellowship in the Philosophy of Logic. The preferred starting date is 1 September 2016, but a later date might be possible.

About the position

The position is funded by the Norwegian Research Council, and connected to the project “Anti-Exceptionalism in Logic”. Further information about the project can be found here: Logic Project

The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the project by doing research on relevant topics.

The fellowship normally funds three years of full time research. It might be possible to extend the fellowship for a fourth year. A substantial part of this additional year would consist of teaching, tutoring and evaluation at Examen philosophicum (an introductory philosophy course mandatory for all university students), or in other preliminary courses at the Faculty of Humanities. The details of the extension would be specified in a separate agreement at the time of appointment.

The successful applicant will be expected to relocate to the University of Bergen and conform to the regulations that apply to the position.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have completed a Norwegian Master’s degree in Philosophy or an equivalent degree. A specialization in logic is required, and a competence in philosophy of language or philosophy of science is an advantage. The Master thesis must be submitted before the application deadline, and the degree must have been awarded prior to the start date of the fellowship.

Applicants must have a strong competence in (written and oral) English. Competence in Norwegian is an advantage.

The successful applicant must have the primary supervisor among the permanent faculty at the department.

The main criterion for assessment and appointment of the fellow is the quality of the PhD proposal.

About the research training

As a PhD candidate, the research fellow will be expected to complete the University’s research training programme within three years. A final plan for the implementation of the research training must be approved by the faculty within three months of the start date. It is a condition that the research fellow satisfies the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.

Salary

The salary will be in accordance with level 50 (code 1017/frame 20.8) on the Norwegian government salary scale, currently NOK 430 200 gross p.a. A compulsory 2% contribution to the State Pension Fund (Statens pensjonskasse) will be deducted from the gross salary.

Additional information

Further information about the fellowship can be obtained from the Head of Department, Professor Reidar Lie (Telephone +47 55 58 94 37 or e-mail Reidar.Lie@uib.no). For details about the research project, contact the Principal Investigator, Dr Ole Hjortland (e-mail: Ole.Hjortland@uib.no).
