Job Details
PhD student investigating the etiology of kidney cancer using a molecular-epidemiological approach
Solliciteer binnen 12 dagen op deze vacature
Job DescriptionThe project is part of the Netherlands Cohort Study (NLCS) that is being conducted at Maastricht University. At baseline of the study in 1986, more than 120,000 men and women aged 55-69 years completed an extensive questionnaire on diet, lifestyle and other risk factors for cancer. Incident cases of cancer in the cohort are identified by annual computerized record linkage with cancer registries and the Dutch pathology registry. In the framework of the NLCS a large collection of kidney tumor samples has been collected from cases with kidney cancer. These samples are being genotyped using a targeted panel of genes (in collaboration with the Department of Genetics, University Medical Centre Groningen) that are frequently mutated in kidney cancer.
You will conduct the epidemiological investigation on the relationship between kidney cancer risk factors (cigarette smoking, BMI, hypertension, alcohol intake) and kidney cancer subtypes defined by mutations in genes and pathways, resulting in a PhD thesis and degree. You will assist in the cleaning and interpretation of the genotyping data and the data management of this project. You will conduct data-analyses regarding the association of risk factors and molecular subtypes of kidney cancer using different epidemiological and bioinformatics tools. You will interpret these data and describe the results in scientific articles and a PhD thesis.
RequirementsIn order to qualify for a PhD position the candidate must have successfully completed a Master degree in epidemiology, bio-informatics, health sciences, human nutrition, molecular life sciences, medical biology or medicine. The candidate must have affinity with epidemiological research (e.g. registered as epidemiologist A), and interest in bio-informatics. Candidates must have a very good competence in written and spoken English.
ConditionsTemporary employment for 4 years.
Your salary would be € 2.174,- gross per month in the first year up to € 2.779,-- gross per month in the fourth year according to the PhD-student salary scale.
Each year an evaluation will take place.
