The Northern Clinical School comprises a range of clinical teaching facilities spread over the whole of the northern area of Sydney and beyond. The school is headquartered at the Royal North Shore Hospital, which has provided teaching to undergraduate medical students for over 50 years. Teaching within this School comprises medical education continuing into the early postgraduate years and, further, into specialist training programs conducted by the various Royal Colleges. There are also links with the education of nurses and allied health practitioners, in hospital and community settings.

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer, with a background in the social psychology of pain, to the Pain Education Unit, part of the Pain Management Research Institute (PMRI) and Kolling Institute. The pain education program is delivered by a small team and is entirely online with students attending from across Australia and overseas. The program is the only one of its kind in Australia and the first to be endorsed by the International Association for the Study of Pain, the leading international scientific body for pain research, giving us a national and international standing that is unique. You will also teach some face to face classes, coordinate and assist with workshops, symposiums and webinars, and develop and lead a research program in-line with the PMRI’s research focus.

 

To succeed in securing this role you will have:

  • a PhD in relevant health discipline
  • post-graduate university qualifications in a relevant discipline (essential); Post-graduate university qualifications in pain management (desirable)
  • extensive research experience in patient-clinician communications in pain field
  • experience with the development and delivery of online and face-to-face educational courses
  • extensive experience in teaching on social psychology of pain; international experience in research on the social psychology of pain
  • experience in online student support and ability to integrate feedback into the course review process
  • demonstrated competence in using online Learning Management Systems (e.g. Black Board) and communication tools (e.g., Adobe Connect).
  • demonstrated ability to supervise post-graduate students
  • demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a small team of educators and researchers
  • demonstrated ability to effectively manage educational projects and consultancies
  • published original research work in relevant scientific journals and presented on research work at national and international scientific conferences.
