The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences
The Centre for Clinical Research Excellence in Spinal Pain, Injury and Health (CCRE SPINE) brings together an internationally recognised multidisciplinary team of researchers in low back pain (LBP). Spinal complaints present the greatest social and economic burden of musculoskeletal conditions in Australia. This reflects current realities, namely, the cause remains unknown, 80% of the population is affected, and isolated professions perform a staggering array of interventions. CCRE SPINE aims to target these realities and improve Australia's capacity to prevent and manage spinal disorders by supporting innovative interdisciplinary research and training.
This PhD scholarship will support a graduate student to undertake a program of study involving qualitative and quantitative research designs to identify factors that causes variation in LBP. The research will be based in the CCRE SPINE for the duration of the PhD program.
The role
The role of Pain Flare PhD Scholarship will involve a program of research to study patient opinions regarding their experience of variations of pain using qualitative methods, systematic review of the literature regarding pain flares, and longitudinal studies of physical and psychological features that could relate to pain variation.
The successful applicant will be based in the CCRE SPINE under the supervision of researchers based at the University of Queensland and the University of Sydney. The scholar will be expected to engage with Postdoctoral Fellows and other research higher degree students within the School and the CCRE SPINE.
The Person
Applicants should have a primary Honours degree (Honours Class 1 or Class 2A); a Master's degree; or a Bachelors degree in a relevant professional discipline with evidence of research experience sufficient for entry to a PhD program at the University of Queensland.
Remuneration
The scholarship is for 3 years, contingent on satisfactory progress, with a possible 6 month extension. The base stipend will be at the rate of AUD $26,288.00 per annum (2016 rate), tax-free.
