Lecturer in Architectural Design (Environment and Construction)

JOB PURPOSE:

The successful applicant will join the School’s team in delivering professionally accredited courses in Architecture will be expected to contribute to existing research and design studio within the School in one or more of the following areas: contemporary architectural low energy sustainable environmental design and constructional technologies. Other areas of expertise within related design fields may be considered if there is evidence of outstanding achievement. Appointees will be expected to integrate their specialist knowledge with teaching programmes through lecture courses and seminars, but also design studio.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:

  • Teach architectural environmental design and construction and assembly in lectures, tutorials and design studio at undergraduate and postgraduate level, informed by a thorough knowledge of specialist research area. At Ac3 level, the postholder may also be expected to design and develop appropriate new modules.
  • Teach a specialist course in constructional assembly and/or environmental design within relevant European Policy frameworks.
  • Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
  • May assist with research students according to own specialist area.
  • Plan and develop independent teaching contributions and contribute to the design or revision of course units.
  • Help to develop appropriate teaching approaches and contribute to curriculum development.


Research:

  • Develop and plan an area of personal design-based research and expertise, and/or undertake research within a specific research project or as a member of a research team.
  • Contribute to and author high quality research publications in referred journals and elsewhere.
  • To assist in identifying sources of external funding and preparing research grant applications to support research in the previously stated areas.
  • Supervise postgraduate research students and research assistants.
  • Provide guidance to other staff and students on own specialist area as appropriate.


Administration/Contribution to the Community:

  • Carry out administrative duties associated with teaching and research commitments, including assessment.
  • Participate in School, Faculty and University administration as requested by line manager. At Ac2 level, these will be of a routine nature.
  • At Ac3 level, the postholder will be expected to develop links with relevant external bodies to create opportunities for future research projects.
  • Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure that all issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
  • Be responsible for the record–keeping associated with teaching and the preparation of teaching materials.


Planning and Organising:

  • Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with Head of School.
  • Design/update modules in line with School’s teaching strategy.
  • Plan and prepare research papers to meet publication deadlines.
  • Prepare research proposals for submission for external funding.
  • As module leader, co-ordinate with others (such as support staff or academic colleagues) to ensure student needs and expectations are met (Ac3 level only).
  • Plan for the use of teaching and research resources as appropriate (Ac3 level only).


Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Use teaching and research resources, laboratories and workshops as required. At Ac3 level, the postholder may be expected to manage these resources.
  • Co-manage, where appropriate, with grant holder external funding relating to research project.
  • Act as mentor for students.
  • Depending on the area of work, could supervise the work of others, for example in research teams and projects (Ac3 level only).


Internal and External Relationships:

  • Member of the School Board and Examination Board and such committees relevant to their administrative duties.
  • Collaborate with other staff within School.
  • Involved in developing links or joining external networks to share information and ideas.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, etc.
  • Participate in and develop networks, for example to identify sources of funding, contribute to student recruitment, act as website editor, secure student placements, market the institution, facilitate outreach work, generate income, obtain consultancy projects, or build relationships for future activities (Ac3 level only).


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • 2(i) Honours degree in Architecture, Environmental Building Design, Environmental Engineering or equivalent.
  • Masters in Architecture (or equivalent).
  • PhD or currently studying for and about to obtain a PhD in an area related to Architectural design.
  • High quality and extensive experience in one or more of the following areas:
    - contemporary architectural environmental design;
    - constructional technologies.
  • Other areas of expertise may be considered if there is evidence of outstanding achievement.
  • A publication record commensurate with stage in career.
  • Applicants at Ac3 level must demonstrate a higher academic standing with a reputation in research and/or teaching within their subject specialism.
  • Evidence of sustained high quality teaching of environmental building / construction design.
  • Evidence of successful teaching in architecture studio.
  • Evidence of teaching a specialism in building technology and/or environmental building design.
  • Experience of EU building design policy frameworks.
- Ability to contribute to broader management and administrative processes; organise outreach activities.
- Ability to engage in critical discussion about current issues in architecture, environmental building design/technology and education. - Ability to present ideas clearly and succinctly.
- Openness to new ways of approaching problems.
- Willingness to work in a team.
- Commitment to contribute to the growth of the School.
- Willingness to travel outside Northern Ireland for periods of up to two weeks in connection with teaching or research duties. Membership or eligibility for membership of a relevant professional institute.


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Working towards or completed PGCHET (or equivalent) with HEA membership.
  • Well-established teacher of complex architectural design and construction at university level, or significant architectural design 3 years experience in the construction industry in practice, research or education.
  • Success in research funding applications. experience in industry/practice.
  • Ability to manage resources and understanding of management processes.
  • Proven ability in team working.
