Job Details
To act as a post-doctoral researcher on a project “A systematic investigation of plasmonic coupling in the non-classical regime” funded by UK EPSRC.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Devise research plans and undertake research under PI supervision within a specific research project, as a member of a research team.
- Design, develop and refine experimental apparatus, field research or experiments in order to obtain reliable data.
- Carry out analyses, critical evaluations, and interpretations using methodologies and other techniques appropriate to area of research.
- Present regular progress reports on research to members of the research group or to external audiences to disseminate and publicise research findings.
- Prepare material for publication in international journals and presentations at national and international conferences.
- Assist grant holder in the preparation of funding proposals and applications to external bodies.
- Carry out routine administrative tasks associated with the research project/s to ensure that project/s are completed on time and within budget. These might include organisation of project meetings and documentation, financial control, risk assessment of research activities.
- Carry out occasional undergraduate supervision, demonstrating or lecturing duties within the post holder’s area of expertise and under the direct guidance of a member of academic staff.
- Read academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of developments in own specialism and related disciplines. Planning and Organising: Ability to undertake day-to-day responsibility in running dedicated laboratory facilities, including own day-to day activity within framework of the agreed research programme.
- Plan the use and scheduling of research resources, laboratories and workshops where appropriate with particular emphasis on forward planning ability in relation to technical support.
- Plan detail of research programme.
- Ability to plan and organise in order to meet reporting/dissemination deadlines.
- Explore novel scientific directions and contribute to follow-up proposal writing.
- Resource Management Responsibilities: Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner. Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research.
Internal and External Relationships:
- Liaise on a regular basis with colleagues and students.
- Assist with supervision of PhD students and MSci projects in lab as required.
- Establish good working relationship with technical and supporting staff.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Hold or be about to obtain a relevant PhD.
- A minimum of three years’ research experience in relevant research field(s).
- Strong intellectual ability.
- Good communication skills.
- Self-motivated and diligent.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA:
- PhD degree in areas of physical or materials science or engineering, preferably associated with one of these fields: plasmonics, nanophotonics, or two-dimensional materials.
- Relevant research experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Experience on optical spectroscopy (such as dark-field scattering spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy) and scanning probe microscopy (such as atomic force microscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy or tunnelling electron microscopy).
- Strong publication records in relevant journals.
- Ability to prepare good scientific manuscripts, with strong ability in relation to data analysing and research planning.
- Ability to devise inventive solutions to problems. Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly to a general audience.
