COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER (PC9) (12 month contract, 20 hours per week)

Division of Immunology Department of Pathology Faculty of Health Sciences

The Division of Immunology invites applications for the above mentioned 20 hours per week part-time position. We seek a dynamic and motivated person for this half-day position to oversee and manage our award winning immunology web-site (www.immunopaedia.org.za). The web site is used on all 5 continents and has over a million hits per month. It is the official learning online site by the International Union of Immunology Societies (IUIS, http://www.iuisonline.org) and is used by students enrolled into IUIS immunology courses in Africa and Latin America. The site prescribes to open-access material and is case-study driven and we are on expansion drive to access all corners of the globe for immunology learning.

The job will involve the production and coordination of materials and activities related to Immunopaedia and to promote its use amongst stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Either an Hons, MSc or PhD in any of the following disciplines: immunology, biochemistry, biology, microbiology and/or a qualification in scientific/health communications/journalism
  • Excellent layout, design and editorial skills with min. 2 years experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a range of target audiences: health users, academic
  • scientists, funders, students
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Good computer literacy and competencies in PC/Apple, including database management and website content management system (WordPress, preferable), with at least 1 years experience.
  • Ability to work as a team member as well as independently.


Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and curate immunology content on the website
  • Digital production and content development for Immunopaedia, including an e-newsletter and social media (Facebook and Twitter)
  • To liaise with various academic/non-academic sources across the globe
  • To liaise with web site designers
  • Coordination and organization of events, including on-line discussions around immunology and
  • coordination of steering committee calls
  • Media liaison and engagement with immunologists, writing of press releases, website articles related to Immunoapedia

 

The annual pro-rated (part-time 20 hours per week) remuneration package will range from R 98,641 to R183,424 per annum.
