Director of Facilities and Technology

As a leader in engineering education and research, the Faculty of Engineering operates specialized facilities for teaching and research ranging from nanofabrication to structural engineering testing and a complex IT environment. Reporting to the Assistant Dean (Operations), the Director, Facilities and Technology leads Faculty of Engineering capital programs; manages existing facilities and infrastructure; provides leadership in the planning, development and operations of information technology systems; leads the Faculty’s technical shop services; and, manages the information technology and technical services teams.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Directs all capital and infrastructure activities for the FOE: leads strategic planning and priority-setting decisions related to the FOE capital program, analyzes all capital priorities including renovations, alterations, and new space requests for current as well as short and long term needs and recommends and implements strategies
  • Manages a mix of capital projects through concept development, formulation, planning, and delivery phases: provides direction and support to the PMO Project Manager(s) as the Faculty lead for capital initiatives and renovations, monitors and contributes to the management of project schedules, budgets, and expenditures; leads the request for proposal (RFP) and request for bid (RFB) documentation, selection and administration processes and provides clarification, approval and direction related to Faculty teaching, research, and administration requirements to architects, project managers, engineering consultants, construction managers and contractors, etc.
  • Coordinates the establishment and renewal of capital and technological infrastructure for the teaching, research, and administrative activities of the departments and the Faculty; analyzes and defines project scope and prepares estimates, budgets, schedules and alternatives for project
  • Develops and manages systems and processes related to facility operations and infrastructure to improve safety, quality, and service delivery
  • Leads the development, implementation, and maintenance of effective workplace health and safety processes and practices such as emergency evacuation, first aid, hazardous materials handling and disposal, and code compliance
  • Provides leadership, guidance, development and management in support of all operational and administration activities as well as staffing for the information technology and technical service groups
  • Develops comprehensive business cases for the management of cost recovery and potential revenue generating strategies and processes for the information technology and technical services group
  • Manages operations of the FOE information technology group and technical shops including defining staff roles and responsibilities, ensuring adequate staffing levels, leading employee development, and optimizing employee performance
  • Leads and manages the budgetary planning and financial management for all technology and technical services and identifies and recommends information technology capital requirements for the Faculty in support of key directions to optimize the use of technology
  • Directs the operation of integrated Faculty of Engineering Shop Services (e.g. machine, instrumentation, and electronics shops) and Information Technology Services
  • Guides the creation of teams and coalitions to further the goals, scope, and objectives of capital projects, information technology services, and technical services

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Science supplemented by specialized knowledge of engineering, pedagogy, and research; Graduate degree preferred
  • Related project management experience; Project management certification(PMP) preferred
  • Extensive experience in the planning and delivery of capital construction and renovation projects including scope development, estimating, and management
  • Outstanding project team building skills
  • General knowledge of structural, mechanical, electrical, architectural, and technological building systems
  • Specialized knowledge of the building systems, plant and infrastructure specific to the type of research carried out in the Faculty of Engineering (e.g., wet and dry lab configurations, clean-room micro-fabrication facilities, and support infrastructure).
  • Specialized knowledge of data network, multimedia system design, and network management in a pedagogical and research environment
  • Knowledge of University of Alberta business practices and processes as they relate to capital construction and renovation projects preferred
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Ability to influence direction and negotiate satisfactory outcomes with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Ability to provide solutions to complex problems with a minimum of direction
  • Competence with a variety of logistic and planning computer applications
  • Significant, demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience

 

This regular continuing position is in accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer agreement and offers a comprehensive benefits package which can be viewed at www.hrs.ualberta.ca. The annual salary range is $69,088 to $115,152.  Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
