Full Time Fixed Term (18 Months)

The University of Southampton is seeking to recruit a researcher to work on the EPSRC funded project ‘Classifying Spaces for Proper Actions and Almost-flat Manifolds’.  The University has a long established, diverse, and highly successful research team in geometric group theory. This research project will both enhance the profile of this group and break new ground connecting group theory, especially non-positively curved groups and almost-crystallographic groups, with geometry and topology.

You will be imaginative in contributing both to the cutting edge research and the strategies for realizing its impact on the wider audience.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in an area of mathematics that is in tune with either the theme of Classifying Spaces of Groups or Aspherical Manifolds.

You will be expected to contribute to at least one of the two parts of the project. The first part deals with discrete groups and their classifying spaces and the second part is on almost-flat manifolds. Expertise in an area of group theory is a key requirement.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Interviews are scheduled to take place in June 2016.

Please include with your application an item of work that you have had published (at least informally) in the public domain.

This position is tenable from 1 September 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Nansen Petrosyan via email n.petrosyan@southampton.ac.uk

Application procedure:

You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Charlene Tyson (Recruitment Team) on +44 (0) 23 8059 6803. Please quote reference 735816PJ on all correspondence.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community. Please note that applications from agencies will not be accepted unless indicated in the job advert.
