Thank you for your interest in the position of Academic Policy and Representation Manager at Kent Union. We are a successful, vibrant and exciting organisation with a bright future ahead. We have achieved a great deal in the last few years, more than doubling in size to our current £10 million turnover, 500 employees and 2,000+ volunteers. We achieved Investor in People Gold status in December 2014, and we were the first students’ union in the UK to achieve Investing in Volunteers status and we have been included in the Sunday Times 100 Best Not-For-Profit Organisations to Work For, for 7 years, placed 25th for 2016.

The Representation and Democracy Department is key to Kent Union. We empower our elected officers, both full time and volunteers, to campaign on issues important to our members and create positive long-lasting change. We support student representatives to engage with key decision makers in the University, the local community and nationally representing the views of our members. Following a democracy review in 2015 we implemented new democratic structures, predominately online, to engage more of our members. All our elections are online and over 50% of our members participate in our democratic processes each year. This year we carried out a review of our academic representation structures and have secured additional funding to carry out its recommendations.

This is a new role that will be responsible for implementing these exciting changes. As Academic Policy and Representation Manager you will head up the division of the department that supports over 300 student reps to successfully represent their peers on their programme of study and enhance their learning experience. You will be the department’s main link between University decision making and the students’ union, coordinating our student reps and officers to sit on boards and committees ensuring they are well versed in the issues. You will also be key in developing policy positions for the students’ union to take forward to the University and support student reps and officers to digest papers, reports and briefs produced by the University.

The successful candidate will have up to date knowledge of HE policy, a track record in managing a large brief and a demonstrable passion for supporting students to change the world. This is an incredibly exciting post and an opportunity to shape and shake up one of our most important areas of work. I hope that you will consider applying and take up the chance to work with inspiring student leaders in a dynamic and vibrant organisation.

Closing date for applications: Monday 20 June 2016
