Research Fellow - Pathogen Genomics

• Full-time fixed term for two years with possibility for renewal, remuneration package: up to $114K p.a. which includes $96K base salary, leave loading and up to 17% superannuation

The Marie Bashir Institute for Infectious Diseases and Biosecurity (MBI) is a multidisciplinary, multi-faculty Institute with members based on the University of Sydney's Westmead, Camperdown and Camden campuses. Its goal is to reduce the impact of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases on human and animal health. The MBI combines research, educational and policy development strengths in clinical infectious diseases, epidemiology, public health microbiology, animal health, social sciences, media studies and biosecurity, together with a strong record of development and capacity building in the Asia-Pacific.


We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, early career researcher to participate in the newly funded NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in Emerging Infectious Diseases (CREID). You will interrogate genomic variables of bacteria involved in foodborne outbreaks and will develop genomic methods of tracking disease transmission pathways. You will also be expected to participate in genomic data generation and analysis of genomic, clinical and epidemiological data, in collaboration with other investigators. The position is based at the Public Health Pathogen Genomics Unit, Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, Westmead Clinical School and the Institute of Clinical Pathology and Medical Research - Pathology West.

In this role you will:

• contribute to international quality research into molecular epidemiology and genomic surveillance of foodborne bacteria
• liaise with the core research team and maintain successful partnerships with microbiologists with CREID research nodes as well as bioinformatics group to create an effective research community
• prepare research publications, presentations and project reports reflecting experience and achievements of the project team
• contribute to teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level at the University of Sydney and attract and mentor postgraduate students
• participate in the functions of CREID, MBI and the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology

To succeed in securing this role you will have:

• a PhD in biomedical science or bioinformatics
• research experience in molecular diagnostics and molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases
• experience in bacterial genomics
• a track record in biomedical research
• high level oral and written communication skills
• evidence of an ability to work both independently and co-operatively with others, and to provide leadership
• experience in collaborative research programmes
