School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management

The School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management (GPEM) is a vibrant, multidisciplinary School with extensive teaching and research programs covering the fields of Geography, Environmental Management, Planning and Occupational Health and Safety Science. The School has a strong research profile and enjoys an excellent success rate in nationally competitive grants (including seven grants in the latest 2016 ARC Linkage round) and has a solid record of high quality publications.

GPEM has identified demography/economic geography, coastal and marine physical processes and geohazards as forward foci to deepen and enhance its existing strengths and excellence. The School is seeking three new teaching and research staff at level B to join a leading School to address these future challenges by collaborating with each other and existing staff. Evaluations will be made according to the excellence of the individuals as well as the degree to which there is potential to contribute to a theme and enhance the reputation of UQ.

The role

The successful appointees will provide teaching and coordination in undergraduate and taught postgraduate programs and will supervise honours, masters and doctoral students in geography. Applicants should be actively developing or have an established research profile through their publications and grants.

These positions may be suitable for an early career academic, to undertake teaching and research related duties and establish a competitive profile. Early Career Academic appointees will further develop the School's programs while developing and strengthening their own research program.

Depending on the expertise of the successful applicant, appointment may be either as an Early Career Academic appointment, or as full-time continuing appointment at Lecturer Level. See selection criteria for further details.

The person

The School is seeking to build expertise in demography/economic geography, coastal and marine physical processes and geohazards. Applicants should possess PhD in a relevant area of geography.  You should also have a strong desire to develop a successful and highly-productive research career in a field of geography, good general research skills, very good writing abilities, and the capacity and willingness to work with multidisciplinary research teams. The successful applicant will have demonstrated teaching skills at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Remuneration

Appointments will be at Academic Level B and the remuneration package will be in the range $89,458.97 - $106,232.23 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the $104,666.99 - $124,291.71 p.a.).

Appointments will be either of the following:

  • Early Career Academic appointment, initially for two years, with the possibility of a further 1 year appointment, with an invitation to apply for confirmation to a continuing appointment during the period of the second appointment. Candidates will be notified prior to interview if they are being considered for appointment as an Early Career Academic.

  • Full-time, continuing appointment.
