Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation

The Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) is a research institute of the University of Queensland (UQ) which was established in 2010 and comprises of three research centres – the Centre for Plant Science, the Centre for Animal Science, the Centre for Nutrition and Food Sciences.

QAAFI's team of 450 researchers, postgraduate students and support staff undertake high impact science for agriculture and food industries. The institute's strong partnership with the Queensland Government provides our researchers with a direct link to the agriculture industry in Queensland, and world class field research facilities throughout Queensland. Agriculture is one of UQ's highest ranked research fields nationally and internationally and QAAFI is a global leader in agricultural research in subtropical and tropical production systems.

QAAFI scientists are driven to make a difference to the agriculture and food industries and have over 150 collaborators worldwide.

QAAFI offers postgraduate programs in the disciplines of Plant, Animal and Food sciences internally and externally and provides professional training to both Australian and international students.

The role

This role will undertake research in an exciting new area of predicting performance of livestock and crops from their own genomes, the genomes of their commensal micro-organisms (for example rumen micro-organisms in the case of cattle), gene expression data and ENCODE style data.  In this position you will develop novel methodologies for predicting production, health and environmental traits with information derived from high throughput sequencing data, design new projects to test and validate these predictions, and undertake research to ensure this technology can be applied cost effectively in the livestock and crop industries.  You will work within a team of scientists and will engage with industry partners.  You will be expected to support other scientists as well as PhD students working in the same area and build a positive workplace culture.

The person

Applicants are required to have a PhD in the area of sequence analysis, genome wide association studies, and complex trait genetics.  You should have a strong desire to have a successful research career developing novel methods for analysis of large genomic data sets from livestock, crops and other species, ultimately to meet the challenge of feeding an ever growing population with high quality food.  The applicant will have a demonstrated ability to build bioinformatics pipelines for analysis of large genomic data sets, and demonstrated ability to publish in international journals.

Remuneration

This is a full time, fixed term appointment at Research Academic level A for 3 years. The remuneration package will be in the range $79,170 - $84,985 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $92,629 - $102,094 p.a.).
