This position is based at Rahway, NJ or Upper Gwynedd, PA and will report to the Associate Vice President, Oncology Project Management. Operating independently, under the broad guidance of the AVP, the incumbent will spend 50-70% leading and developing project managers in planning, integrating and executing a segment of the oncology development portfolio including evaluation of licensing opportunities. Acting as key partner for MRL, GHH and MMD colleagues, as well as a drug development advisor to staff and project teams, the incumbent may also serve as a PM on a development team; lead and / or direct critical change projects for MRL/Merck; identify and evaluate PM best practices; represent Merck through participation and/or leadership in external PM societies and organizations; and, oversee implementation of identified best practices within MRL/Merck.

The remaining 30-50% of time will be devoted to developing project managers with integrated expertise in project management, end-to-end drug development and leadership competencies, and to ensuring effective and efficient departmental operations. Emphasis will be on development of PM talent through direct management of project managers and those who manage PMs, as well as effective communication and collaboration with all stakeholder groups. The Executive Director will be accountable for performance of their staff consistent with objectives and expectations as well as ensuring the development of this next set of PM Leaders.

Qualifications

Education:

- Bachelor's degree required with a concentration in a scientific-related discipline strongly preferred.

- Advanced scientific degree (e.g., MS, PharmD, Ph.D.) or a combination of equivalent experience and training preferred.

- Project Management certification / training (PMP) and / or coursework & training in Project Management preferred.

Experience and Skills:

- With Bachelor's degree, desire 15 years+ of relevant job experience (pharma / biotech / PM). Years of experience requirement is relaxed for candidates with advanced degree, but must have 8+ years of experience in a PM or related role/expertise in pharma and / or biotech.

- Must have extensive experience with the planning and execution of strategies for drug / vaccine product registration and commercialization / life-cycle management (can be R&D, manufacturing or commercial perspective) with demonstrated ability to translate knowledge and expertise to other development teams and areas.

- If a Merck employee at time of hiring, must be well connected and networked within MRL and Merck; widely recognized within the organization as a project management expert. If an external hire, must be able to establish internal networks quickly. Must be connected in external PM / pharma related networks / organizations.

- Proven ability to analyze, integrate, recommend, contribute to development of conceptual plans for, and lead implement of, strategic, process, and team improvement and change initiatives cross-functionally.

- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage scope, time and cost of assigned projects; is business savvy and results oriented.

- Effective at conveying a vision, energizing others, establishing goals, delegating responsibility, mentoring and coaching.

- Advocate for best practices / change agent - successful in working with other functions/divisions to create excellence in PM and drug development.

- Well developed and effective team facilitation and leadership skills; consistently establishes cooperative team environments.

- Knows when and how to appropriately raise issues and drive discussion within peer group and with management.

- Demonstrated courage of conviction - able to speak up / contribute in all circles; comfortable challenging ideas or proposals, including senior management.

- Brings forward creative ideas and contributes to setting strategic plans for assigned projects.

- Excellent communicator. Demonstrated accomplishment and skill in oral and written communication.

- Keeps relevant stakeholders fully apprised of project / initiative status and issues.
