To this end, we strive to create an environment of mutual respect, encouragement and teamwork. As part of our global team, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with talented and dedicated colleagues while developing and expanding your career.
The Process Development Intensification Laboratory (iLab) within the Chemical Engineering R+D Department is seeking highly motivated and technically focused individuals with demonstrated expertise in immobilization of enzymes for use in biocatalysis. As a member of the iLab and the Biocatalysis Technology Working Group, the incumbent is expected to carry out independent research which involves conceiving, designing, planning, and implementing advanced studies aimed at further establishing immobilization methodologies. The incumbent is expected to work closely with a highly collaborative team of scientists and engineers from CPDC, Chemical Biotechnology and Process Chemistry to identify and implement novel immobilization methodologies to support Merck’s growing biocatalysis portfolio. Particular focus will be placed on identifying lead immobilization technologies for Merck’s most established biocatalytic transformations.
A high level of innovation, creativity, and self-initiative along with the ability to plan and execute technically sound experiments are expected. Strong communication skills as well as a supportive and mentoring nature are also critical to success in this role, as impact broadly across the biocatalysis community is also anticipated.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Identification and implementation of novel immobilization methodologies
- Development and deployment of screening techniques for assessment of immobilization efficiency, as well as activity maintenance, including both initial activity and extended run time stability testing
- Building and leveraging fundamental understanding on investigated immobilization methodologies so as to inform future immobilization procedure selection
Qualifications
Education:
- The position requires a PhD in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering or a related field from an accredited college/university.
Required Experience:
- Experience in protein/enzyme immobilization, enzyme biocatalysis, and/or a related discipline
- Problem solving and strong experimental design/hands-on experimentation skills, with particular emphasis placed on the design and execution of immobilization screening and reaction execution procedures.
Preferred Experience:
- Familiarity with traditional organic synthetic chemistry
- Experience in immobilized enzyme reactor design or flow chemistry
- Strong history of publication in peer-reviewed journals
