Responsibilities:

- Planning and executing statistical analyses to support global scientific and medical publications in collaboration with a publication team including clinicians, medical writers, external scientific leaders, and marketing representatives.

- Participating in the generation of objectives for publications that address key marketing messages and developing and executing data analysis strategies to address these objectives.

- Providing expert input into data interpretation and presentation.

- Providing technical direction to statistical programming in analyzing clinical trial data, and coordinating the statistical activities for publications.

- May interact with Academic Research Organization (ARO), Contract Research Organization (CRO) and external statistical consultants.

Primary activities:

- Serves as statistical representative and lead in the cross-functional publication teams for the strategic planning and execution of global scientific and medical publications.

- Develops secondary data analysis plans and independently determines appropriate statistical methodology for analysis.

- Analyzes data and interprets results from secondary analyses to meet objectives of the study publication. Independently applies and implements basic and complex statistical techniques to these analyses.

- Independently identifies and anticipates statistical or other potential problems arising in the conduct of secondary analyses, proposes solutions and carries them out.

- Addresses comments from co-authors and journal reviewers and incorporates revisions.

- May lead a team of statisticians and statistical programming staff to ensure that all programs meet analysis requirements.

- Evaluates appropriateness of available software for planned analyses and presentations

- Prepares oral and written reports to effectively communicate results of secondary analyses to the publication team, Merck Management, or individual investigators.

- Provides responses to queries relating to study design, analysis, and interpretation posed by the medical writers, clinicians, and/or investigators.

- Involved in research activities for innovative statistical methods and applications in clinical trial development.

- Mentors and guides junior staff in functional activities.

Qualifications

Education:

- PhD or equivalent degree in statistics/biostatistics or related discipline with a minimum of 6 years relevant work experience, or a Master’s degree with a minimum of 9 years relevant work experience.

Required:

- Solid knowledge of statistical analysis methodologies and clinical trial designs.

- Strong presentation and written communication skills. Able to function effectively in a team environment.

- Solid knowledge of statistical and data processing software e.g. SAS and/or R.

- Must also demonstrate the ability to learn, be proactive and motivated, and consistently focus on details and execution.

- Publications in peer reviewed statistical/medical journals.

Preferred:

- An understanding of biology of disease and drug discovery and development in a variety of therapeutic areas.
