Job Descripition

The purpose of the Research Software Engineer post is to enhance The University’s capability and expertise in developing Research Software. This role will be based in the Sheffield Open Data Science Initiative (http://opendsi.cc/). The initiative aims to bring the philosophy of sharing and community resource assimilation that underpins the success of the open source software movement to the area of research software. This capitalises on the underlying social driver that many talented people would like to see their ideas and work being applied for the widest benefit possible.

The academic roles of the initiative are to:

  • Make new analysis methodologies available as widely and rapidly as possible with as few conditions on their use as possible.
  • Educate our commercial, scientific and medical partners in the use of these latest methodologies
  • Act to achieve a balance between data sharing for societal benefit and the right of an individual to own their data.

Within The Open Data Science Initiative, the primary activity of this role is to develop part of the OpenDreamKit project (http://opendreamkit.org/). OpenDreamKit is a Horizon 2020 European Research Infrastructure project that contributes to the open source computational mathematics ecosystem. Initial tasks will be to develop Sun Grid Engine support and integration for Project Jupyter Hub and develop a short course for lecturers on using OpenDreamKit in data science and education.

Applicants must have:

  • a PhD degree or equivalent experience in a computationally based field, excellent programming and testing skills in Python and C/C++ and significant experience with supporting High Performance Computing systems.

The post is fixed-term for 2 years.
