Job Description

Maastricht University offers unique bachelor education in the natural sciences with the Maastricht Science Programme (Faculty of Humanities and Sciences). This programme combines a variety of disciplines, including biology, chemistry and physics, into one curriculum. Currently, the total enrolment of this growing programme is close to 250 students from over 60 countries.

The Maastricht Science Programme follows the tradition of the ‘Liberal Arts and Sciences’, with an emphasis on student centred learning in a small-scale college-community. At the Maastricht Science Programme, this student centred learning is characterized by the opportunity for students to build their own curriculum in the natural sciences, intensive staff-student interactions in small groups, community building, extracurricular activities and personal guidance. The programme is taught in English and is highly selective. Combined with the unique strengths of Maastricht University, such as problem based learning, an international focus and working at the edge of research and entrepreneurship in an inspiring environment, Maastricht Science Programme offers an innovative concept of education in the natural sciences. Lectures and group meetings take place in the historic centre of Maastricht, whereas the practical parts (skills, projects, undergraduate research) of the programme are carried out in our own well-equipped laboratories at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus near Geleen.

We are searching for a talented and motivated candidate with a solid background in plant physiology and/or molecular plant biology to join our team. The candidate should have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, which is the main focus of this position. The candidate will be responsible for developing and teaching biology courses, skills and projects for bachelor students. In addition, he/she will supervise bachelor thesis students in their research. Although our search focuses on candidates with a strong background in plant molecular biology and/or physiology the lecturer should also be able to teach other related (biological) subjects. Candidates with a multidisciplinary interest and willingness to cross boundaries between scientific disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. The lecturer will also be expected to become an active part of our community, advising students, coordinating parts of our programme, organizing activities, building a scientific network for our students to explore and establishing contacts with other faculties within Maastricht, the Netherlands and across the world.

Requirements

The ideal candidate has a PhD in plant biology, focused on molecular biology and/or physiology, and values teaching at the undergraduate level. Good familiarity with biology teaching at the bachelor level in an international college setting would be considered an asset. He/she has an excellent command of the English language and flourishes well in an international setting. He/she is stimulating and approachable for students and will readily interact with colleagues within Maastricht University and with other knowledge and business partners.

Conditions

Your salary will be between € 2532,00 and € 4654,00 gross per month, according to scale 10-11, depending on qualifications and prior experience. On top of this, there is an 8% holiday and an 8.3% year-end allowance. Non-Dutch applicants could be eligible for a favorable tax treatment (30% rule). The contract is temporary, initially for two years.

The terms of employment of Maastricht University are set out in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO). Furthermore, local UM provisions also apply. For more information look at the website www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/
