JOB PURPOSE:

To undertake significant teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the area of Adult Nursing, specialising in either Diabetes or Respiratory Nursing; to maintain a portfolio of appropriate scholarly activity; and to contribute to the School’s administration/outreach activity.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:

  • Deliver a range of teaching and learning activities within Adult Nursing, specialising in Diabetes or Respiratory Nursing at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the School, including lectures, interactive sessions, practicals, computer sessions and field work.
  • Develop approaches to teaching and learning, which are appropriate for Diabetes or Respiratory Nursing and that reflect developing practice.
  • Develop and use a range of appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of quality teaching in the area of Adult Nursing within the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
  • Develop and advise others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
  • Contribute to the design of new innovative teaching programmes and contribute to curriculum development.
  • Supervise practical work where it is part of the course and advise students on techniques.
  • Act as an internal examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate students.


Scholarly Activity:

  • Engage in scholarly activity e.g. conference paper presentations, external funding secured, book reviews published, writing practice manuals, publication of professional materials.
  • Develop proposals and prepare, in collaboration with others, funding bids for external contract work that might involve, for example, publishing materials for use within a profession.
  • Develop networking links with relevant professional bodies to ensure that teaching reflects current best practice in own area of subject specialism.
  • Maintain and develop teaching and subject expertise.


Administration/Contribution to the Community:

  • Contribute significantly to the development and running of the School by taking on appropriate School co-ordinating roles.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach and marketing strategy including contribution to Open Days and other course promotional events.
  • Act as mentor or appraiser to colleagues, including Teaching Assistants, advising on their personal development and ensuring that they are meeting the standards required.
  • Act as a personal tutor and link lecturer for students to ensure, as far as practicable, that relevant issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
  • Engage with key stakeholders both within the University and with external partners. Carry out designated School administrative duties, including, for example, participation in committee work, assisting in the process of admissions, and preparation of submission for teaching quality assessment.


Planning and Organising:

  • Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with Head of School.
  • As programme and module leader, co-ordinate with others (such as support staff or academic colleagues and industry and public sector partners) to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
  • Plan for and set teaching objectives over a number of years.
  • Design/update modules in line with School’s teaching strategy.


Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Manage teaching resources, laboratories and workshops as required.
  • Mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development. Act as a mentor for students in capacity of personal tutor and link lecturer.


Internal and External Relationships:

  • A member of the School Board and Examination Board and such committees relevant to their administrative duties.
  • Communicate complex and conceptual ideas to students as well as to peers using high level skills and a range of media.
  • Collaborate with other academics within School and Faculty.
  • Participate in and develop networks, for example to identify sources of funding, contribute to student recruitment, secure student placements, market the institution, facilitate outreach work, generate income, obtain consultancy projects, or build relationships for future activities.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing partnerships with local community groups, Trusts and independent providers, etc.


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Primary degree in Nursing.
  • Higher degree (Masters or equivalent in a relevant subject area).
  • Current registration status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse (Adult), or possession of qualifications required for such registration.
  • Evidence of scholarly research activity, e.g relevant publications, conference papers, external funding, book reviews etc.
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate and / or postgraduate level in Nursing, having ability to design course materials and to plan and organise the delivery and assessment of taught courses in Nursing (Adult), specialising in the areas of diabetes or respiratory nursing.
  • Minimum of 2 years clinical nursing experience within the last 5 years.
  • Evidence of good teaching evaluations.
  • Experience of contribution to broader management and administrative processes.
  • Experience of contribution to a wider range of community/outreach activities.
  • High level of analytical capability.
  • Ability to manage resources and staff. Ability to devise, advise on and manage teaching programmes.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to students, academic colleagues and external audiences.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to liaise with students and colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of self-motivation, whilst also working in a team.
  • Demonstrable intellectual ability.
  • This position is exempted from the Rehabilitation of Offenders (Exceptions) Order (Northern Ireland) 1979 and any applicant who is offered employment will be subject to an Enhanced Disclosure Check/Criminal Records Bureau Check.


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Diploma in Education, PGCHET (or equivalent; recorded with the NMC) or HEA membership.
  • Doctoral Degree in Nursing or a related subject.
  • Experience in developing a programme of educational research.
  • Experience of module co-ordinatorship.
  • Experience of teaching postgraduate (taught) students.
  • Experience of student mentorship / or pastoral tutor. Experience of educational quality assurance mechanisms.
  • Experience of a range of assessment methodologies.
  • Experience of teaching the Diabetes or Respiratory Nursing.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the complexities of marketing/selling Higher Education in either domestic or international markets.
