Job Details

There is a vacancy for a PhD position in media studies at the University of Bergen. The position is for a period of 3 years, in the project Media Use, Culture and Public Connection: Freedom of Information in “The Age of Big Data” (MeCIn) funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

About the project/work tasks:

Following a merger with Information Science in 2004, media studies at the University of Bergen is housed in the Department of Information Science and Media Studies. Media research at the department is partly based in a humanistic interpretive tradition emphasising historical-critical studies, and partly in theories and methodologies central to the social sciences. A collective research focus is issues pertaining to democracy and cultural dissemination. The research group Media use and audience studies, led by Professor Hallvard Moe, focuses on questions concerning how audiences interpret, use and act upon all forms of media and media texts. The group examines various dimensions of media use, including identity formation and democratic, rhetorical, social and sociocultural aspects of media use and reception.

The successful applicant will form part of the research team within the Media use and audience studies research group working on the project Media Use, Culture and Public Connection: Freedom of Information in “The Age of Big Data” (MeCIn), funded by the Norwegian Research Council (2015-2019). MeCIn will provide new knowledge about to what extent and how people in Norway practice their freedom of information across media and cultural arenas.

The overall project objective entails

  • to chart how citizens' freedom of information relate to socio-cultural differences,
  • to understand the complex roles media and culture play for public connection in the everyday lives of people in Norway, and
  • to scrutinize the groups who fall outside the mainstream in this regard, and thus throw light on both the variations of and mechanisms of public disconnectedness.

The successful applicant will primarily contribute to MeCIn’s objective. At the core of the PhD student’s work will be the development and implementation, and analysis of a nationwide survey of social variations in the Norwegian populations’ public connection through media, culture, civil society groups etc. In addition to contributing to develop and implement the survey, the PhD student is expected to develop and carry out a PhD project that contributes to the overall MeCIn objectives, for example through analysis of the survey data or other relevant data (existing or produced as part of the project work). The PhD project can broadly aim at uncovering general patterns in the population, or aim at specific groups, for instance through analyses of certain forms of media and cultural us, or by studying certain social groups.

Throughout the project period, the successful applicant will meet, and be expected to contribute to, a dynamic and internationally networked project group.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a master's degree or the equivalent in media studies, sociology, political science or social anthropology or equivalent disciplines. The degree has to be completed by the application deadline
  • The requirements are generally a grade B or better on Master thesis and for the Master degree in total
  • Work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Good work capacity and enthusiasm for research
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English
  • Good command of the Norwegian, Danish or Swedish language
  • Interest in working with statistical methods

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview.

Applicants are also advised to familiarize themselves with the MeCIn project plan, which can be obtained from Professor Hallvard Moe (Hallvard.moe@uib.no).
