Job Purpose

To contribute to our knowledge and understanding of the role of Epstein Barr virus in the pathogenesis of T cell and NK cell lymphoproliferative diseases and malignancies. The project is funded by the MRC and focuses on how Epstein Barr virus initiates infection of T cells and NK cells and subsequently drives the development of clonal proliferations and malignancies of the infected cells. In vitro and ex vivo experiments will also be performed to begin to identify new effective therapeutic options.

Person Specification

  • First degree in biology – with a significant immunology and/or virology component.
  • PhD in immunology, viral immunology or tumour virology.
  • Proven track record in immunological techniques such as functional T cell assays.
  • Practical experience in culture of primary lymphocytes.
  • Practical experience in molecular biology techniques.
  • Practical experience in design and implementation of multiparameter flow cytometry assays.
  • Practical experience with gene expression analysis, real-time PCR and primer design.
  • Experience of working in cat 2 facilities with infectious virus.
  • High level analytical capability
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills (including written and presentational)
  • Effective organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines.
  • Evidence of an ability to work individually or as part of a team.
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Working knowledge of health and safety requirements within the laboratory setting.
