JOB PURPOSE:

To deliver courses and contribute to the development of a variety of computing degrees offered by the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:

  • Develop teaching and learning methods, design course units and deliver a range of teaching and assessment activities including lectures, coursework, practicals, and projects in the subject.
  • Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Be responsible for practical and project work where applicable, and advise students on techniques.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of quality teaching within the subject.
  • Develop and advise others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
  • Contribute to the design of innovative teaching programmes, including those involving distance and blended learning.
  • Plan and review own approach to teaching.


Scholarly Activity:

  • Develop links with relevant professional bodies to ensure that teaching reflects current best practice in own area of subject specialism.
  • Develop proposals and prepare, in collaboration with others, funding bids for external contract work that might involve, for example, publishing materials for use within the profession.
  • Engage in scholarly activity e.g. conference paper presentations, external funding secured, book reviews published, writing practice manuals, publication of professional materials.
  • Maintain and develop teaching and subject expertise.


Administration/Contribution to the Community:

  • Contribute to the School’s outreach strategy.
  • Develop networking links with relevant industries and external bodies to encourage technology transfer opportunities and create opportunities for future collaboration.
  • Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure, as far as practicable, that all issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
  • Carry out designated School functions, including, for example, participation in committee work, assisting in the process of admissions, preparation of submission for teaching quality assessment etc.


Planning and Organising:

  • Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with Head of School.
  • As module co-ordinator, liaise with others (such as support staff or academic colleagues) to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
  • Design/update modules in line with School’s teaching strategy. Plan for the use of teaching resources, laboratories and workshops as appropriate. Manage projects relating to own area of work.


Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Manage own teaching and administrative demands under general supervision of Head of School.
  • Assist in the development of skills and competence in others (for example through the supervision of Teaching Assistants).
  • Manage use of resources for teaching.
  • Participate in judgements regarding the use of resources within school/area
  • Act as mentor for students.


Internal and External Relationships:

  • Membership of the School Board and Examination Board and such committees relevant to their administrative duties.
  • Collaborate with other staff within School.
  • Involved in developing links or joining external networks to share information and ideas.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, industries, etc.


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • At least a 1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a computing related discipline.
  • Either a minimum of three years’ post qualification experience of computing within a third level institution, or a minimum of three years’ experience as a software engineer.
  • High level of analytical capability, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Evidence of ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to design course materials and to plan and organise the delivery and assessment of taught courses in software engineering.


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Preferably have or be about to obtain a computing related PhD, or, have a computing related master’s degree and be clearly committed to undertake a relevant PhD.
  • Knowledge of the development and educational use of technology within an educational environment to support distance and blended learning
  • Knowledge of contemporary software engineering practices, for example agile and lean development, test-driven development, SaaS, SOA.
  • Evidence of designing course materials and planning and organising the delivery and assessment of taught courses in software engineering.
  • PGCHET and/or membership of an appropriate professional and/or teaching body e.g. HEA.
  • Able to undertake some evening teaching during term time.
