Salary:   £28,982 to £32,600 per annum
Full Time Fixed Term
Closing Date:   Friday 08 July 2016

Duration: September 1st 2016 until November 30th 2017 with the potential to extend to February 28th 2019.

Applications are invited for the post of post-doctoral Research Fellow to join a multi-disciplinary team developing new technology to improve arm recovery following stroke.  You will be working on engineering research components of the project “Low-cost personalised instrumented clothing with integrated Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) electrodes for upper limb rehabilitation“. The project is funded by the Medical Research Council.

The multidisciplinary team includes engineers, therapists and neurologists from two NHS Trusts, and two partner organisations (a commercial partner, Odstock Medical Limited, specialising in FES devices and the Stroke Association). You will be working closely with a clinical Research Fellow, a material engineering Research Fellow, as well as the engineering and clinical co-investigators on the project. You will be based in Electronics and Computer Science.

The job will require you to develop software that will enable the patient to use the wearable technology effectively. Installed on a portable device, this software will visually guide the patient in performing movements while interfacing with the wearable technology to coordinate the assistance they receive. The job requires strong experience of programming in either C, C++, C#, visual basic or similar platforms within an engineering, scientific or mathematical field. Alternatively, strong experience of developing and/or testing automatic controllers together with proficiency in programming languages such as Matlab or LabView, and some familiarity with the above languages would also provide suitable experience. In either case, strong programming skills are essential, together with enthusiasm and a willingness to work within a multidisciplinary team to develop new technology for stroke rehabilitation.

The job provides an opportunity for you to develop your academic career and gain a wide range of research experience; you will be supported by an experienced research team who are international leaders.
