The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) seeks to appoint a Professor/Associate Professor to serve as Director to lead the Unit of Maritime Law and Maritime Studies, which is located within the School of Law on the Howard College Campus in Durban.

The Director of the Unit of Maritime Law and Maritime Studies will be tasked with developing, leading, directing, and implementing the Unit’s vision, and overall long- and short-term strategic direction. The Director will also be responsible for policy implementation, fundraising, forming and maintaining key stakeholder relationships, and ensuring proper corporate governance and financial oversight of the Unit’s operations. He or she will also be responsible for overseeing the postgraduate teaching and research programmes in maritime law and maritime studies and will provide academic, administrative and management leadership to the Unit’s permanent and ad hoc staff members in accordance with University rules and regulations.

The Director will report to the Dean and Head of the School of Law.

Minimum Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Maritime Law/Maritime Studies or related discipline; Five years’ experience in teaching and research in the relevant field or discipline;
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in post-graduate supervision and mentoring junior staff in research; and
  • A sustained record of peer-reviewed publications. Advantages
  • A record of accessing external funding; and
  • Experience within a professional organisation at an appropriately senior level within the maritime industry, or evidence of the provision of high-level consulting services to the maritime industry over a sustained period.

 

Appointment to this post will be on the January 2012 Conditions of Service.
