This Fellowship is hosted within the EU-funded INSPIRATION project (managing soil and groundwater impacts from agriculture for sustainable intensification), a multi-site Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network co-ordinated by the University of Sheffield.

INSPIRATION is a multidisciplinary consortium of 26 academic and non-academic partners across 8 European countries, which aims to develop low-technology management practices, monitoring approaches, modelling and decision-making tools, and innovative technology applications in the field of sustainable agriculture, by a combination of fundamental and applied science (www.inspirationitn.eu). It provides a comprehensive training environment for early career scientists and engineers in this field, preparing them for careers in industry, commercial organisations, advisory and regulatory bodies, or for research careers in academia and government institutes in the public and private sector.

The main duties and responsibilties of this post include:-

• The design and development of experimental systems, methods or apparatus, field research or experiments in order to obtain reliable data.
• The analysis and recording of data.
• Liaison with partner organisations both within and outside the project.
• Preparation of summary technical and progress review reports.
• Management and ongoing updating of research results, project information, training records and other data in a project archive/database on the Inspiration website.
• Assistance in writing supporting documents to contribute to and support the work of the Research Group.
• Planning for specific aspects of the research programme

Candidates must have a good first degree or MSc qualification (or equivalent experience) in a relevant science or engineering discipline, along with excellent English language skills demonstrated by, for example, IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 600 (or equivalent), to meet entry requirements for Doctoral qualification. It is essential that candidates have experience of conducting independent learning and research projects, and of writing research project reports and preparing presentations on their own research. Also essential are effective interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, along with IT skills including use of Microsoft Office, the internet, and specialised packages to undertake literature searches. Knowledge and experience of methods for standard and molecular microbial analysis and methods for chemical analysis would be desirable.

This post is fixed term for a period of 36 months.
