The School of Social and Political Sciences (SSPS), composed of the departments of anthropology, government and international relations, political economy, sociology and social policy, and peace and conflict studies, is the focus for the strategic development of the social sciences at Sydney with a view to our becoming Australia’s leading centre for research and teaching in the area.

Dr Lynne Chester, an SSPS energy researcher, is undertaking a project for the Energy Pipelines CRC which is a 4-program $77.5 million CRC, established in 2010, with 4 research partners (the Universities of Adelaide, Wollongong, Deakin and RMIT) and 55 industry partners (energy suppliers, constructors, and operators). This 18-month project to assess the impact of economic regulation on the long-term safety outcomes in the Australian gas pipelines sector falls under the auspices of the CRC’s RP4 ‘Public safety and security of supply program’.

 As the successful applicant, you will:

  • be actively involved in the planning and conduct of the project
  • be responsible for data collection (including the conduct of interviews), and analysis and interpretation    of the project’s qualitative and quantitative data
  • contribute to research reports, project progress reports and publications arising from the project
  • be involved in and, if required, organise activities relating to the project.


To be successful in this role you will have:

  • a PhD in Social Science (or significant progress towards a PhD) with specialisation in economic and/or safety regulation
  • the potential to publish in peer-reviewed academic journals in the fields of energy policy, economic and safety regulation, and organisational studies
  • a sound knowledge of Australia’s economic regulatory regime and its application to energy networks
  • a sound knowledge of Australia’s workplace health and safety regulatory regime and its application to hazardous industries
  • demonstrated experience in the application of qualitative and quantitative empirical social science research methods, including interviews
  • demonstrated administrative abilities to organise data collection procedures, interview schedules, transcription services and regular project reporting
  • the ability to build effective networks with colleagues and effectively liaise with industry and government
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills appropriate for interacting with staff and industry, together with a strong commitment to teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration.
