Job Details

The Aga Khan University (AKU) is an international self-governing university chartered in 1983. It is a role model for academic, research and services in health and higher education in the developing world. The University currently has teaching sites in Pakistan, East Africa, the United Kingdom and Afghanistan, and is a key constituent of Aga Khan Development Network. 

The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) is a 646 beds tertiary care health facility and is a regional referral center. It is the only hospital in Pakistan accredited by Joint Commission International (JCIA).

Department of Emergency Medicine at the Aga Khan University/Hospital, Karachi is the regional leader in establishing high quality clinical service and academic programs.  The current clinical facility consists of 62 beds including fast track, separate adult and pediatric emergency units, a clinical decision unit, resuscitation rooms, isolation rooms and triage.  The main ED provides care to over 65000 patients a year. Most patients require complex medical and surgical/trauma care. In addition, department supervise a satellite urgent care center.  

The department was the first to establish a 5-year residency program in country. Currently 23 residents are in different phases of training. Emergency Medicine is a mandatory rotation in the final year MBBS program and is consistently evaluated as one of the best rotation by students. Department is active in research and has obtained funding through various international grant awarding bodies. The current research support includes epidemiologist, a qualitative researcher, biostatistician and data management support.  The department is the site for Fogarty International Center/National Institutes of Health injury/trauma research training program for the past 11 years and provides support for training of injury/emergency care researchers in epidemiology/biostatistics, health policy and clinical research.  Till recently, the department was the only World Health Organization’s Collaborating Center on Emergency Medicine and Trauma globally. 

Responsibilities

The Chair will provide dynamic leadership to the department to pursue its academic and service mandate. He/she will report to the Dean of the Medical College and CEO, AKUH, Karachi.

Requirements

Candidates must have suitable post-graduate qualifications with track record of exemplary leadership and clinical experience in a teaching hospital. The incumbent should have strong interpersonal skills, notable achievements in research and teaching. The appointment will be initially for three years, renewable for a further two years subject to performance review.
