JOB PURPOSE:

To play a leadership role in the establishment and expansion of the Centre for Data Science and Scalable Computing (CDSSC) as one of the strategic priority research areas in the ECIT Global Research Institute.

To undertake significant software and/or hardware development projects and manage research projects and deliverables focused on data science and scalable computing.

To contribute to the commercialisation and technology transfer of research outputs.

To manage and lead collaborative and multi-disciplinary research projects within ECIT and contribute to a number of on-going research programmes in collaboration with international corporations, research intensive SMEs, and research and academic institutes.

To assist with the raising of substantial funding from industry and major government sources, nationally and internationally.

MAJOR DUTIES:

To undertake, manage and supervise research and development projects in data science and scalable computing, with the aim of establishing and growing the CDSSC rapidly as a world class centre that successfully combines leading edge research with knowledge transfer, commercialisation and economic impact.

Design and develop novel data analytic algorithms (including real-time data analytics) addressing big data challenges.

Design and develop advanced data extraction and querying systems, as well as applying such techniques to real-world problems.

Design and develop data-driven intelligent systems for applications involving large, complex networks.

Design and implementation of system software or firmware for integrating new processor, memory, communication and storage technologies in HPC, Cloud and IoT infrastructures.

Design and implementation of system software or firmware for monitoring and improving the efficiency and resilience of HPC, Cloud and IoT infrastructures.

Develop and execute project plans to completion.

Design and development of proof of concept demonstrators that incorporate newly developed capabilities emerging from CDSSC research groups.

Contribute to the planning, development, delivery, maintenance and trialling of the CDSSC concept demonstrator and pre-accelerator programmes.

Produce high quality technical reports and deliverables to enable commercialisation or assist in generating funding opportunities to support further programme activity.

Help develop the international reputation of CDSSC through presentations, attendance at trade-shows and visiting major companies and research centres worldwide. Links strongly with industrial partners to facilitate the transfer of CDSSC capabilities into commercial R&D teams.

Contribute strongly to achieving CDSSC objectives and provide a role model for younger staff.

Provide mentoring and training to staff/students as appropriate.

Support inward investment initiatives by the regional development agency (Invest NI) by participation in strategic events and activities.

Carry out routine administrative tasks to ensure project goals are completed on time and within budget.

Undertake any other duties that may reasonably be requested by management.

Contribute to the research and development plans for CDSSC.

Plan the use of equipment and laboratory resources as appropriate.

Plan in advance to meet deadlines as required by colleagues and management.

Liaise with other team members to achieve coordinated progress against objectives.

Resource Management Responsibilities:

Ensure research and development facilities and resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.

Provide guidance as required to supporting staff and students assisting with research activities.

Responsibility for work of others and allocation of resources as required.

Internal and External Relationships:

Initiate and sustain engagements with team members to facilitate progress against objectives.

Participate in external engagements with commercial partners, government bodies and academic institutions related to specialisation as required.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

2:1 Honours Degree, or equivalent qualification, in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related discipline.

Must have significant R&D or industrial experience in foundations, or methodologies, or systems for processing large-scale and diverse data.

For Principal Engineer post – substantial experience is required.

Familiarity with state-of-the-art data analytics, data querying solutions for either static and streaming data; or familiarity with system software for large-scale computing.

For Principal Engineer post – substantial experience in one of the above.

A sustained stream of high quality outputs such as technical reports, major component design specifications and project deliverables which have successfully passed formal quality review procedures. Relevant peer reviewed publications may also be acceptable.

For Principal Engineer post – substantial track record of high quality outputs.

Proven track record of supervision of others relating to technical leadership, direction and assistance to project teams.

For Principal Engineer post – strong and successful track record of above.

Ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in writing.

Evidence of strong presentation skills and ability to prepare clear and concise presentation materials.

Strong team player, prepared to work closely with other members of a large multidisciplinary research and development team.

Willingness to attend meetings and conferences nationally and internationally as requested.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

A PhD in a relevant area.

Evidence of executing and managing industrial and/or research projects.

Evidence of assisting in raising substantial funding to support further activity. (Activities which support and contribute to commercialisation will also be considered as evidence of raising funding to support further research activity.)

Entrepreneurship experience.

Knowledge of graph mining, data extraction and integration research, software frameworks for large-scale data analytics, and large-scale system virtualisation and/or storage management.

For Principal Engineer post – substantial knowledge in the above.

Project management as principal investigator, co- investigator, or major task/work package leader.

Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research and development methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.

Ability to interact constructively with others including senior academic staff and industrial/government collaborators.

Strong drive to complete projects on time and to deliver the promised outcomes.
