The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) is a cluster of world-class centres for research into advanced manufacturing technologies used in the aerospace, power generation, medical and other high-value manufacturing sectors. The cluster has a global reputation for helping companies overcome manufacturing problems and has become a model for collaborative research involving universities, academics and industry, worldwide. Cluster members include the AMRC with Boeing, Nuclear AMRC, the AMRC Design Prototyping and Testing, Training and Knowledge Transfer Centres; Castings Technology International (CTI); the National Metals Technology Centre (NAMTEC); Medical AMRC and Factory 2050.

The AMRC with Boeing and Nuclear AMRC are part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, a consortium of seven leading manufacturing and process research centres, backed by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK. The AMRC specialises in advanced machining, materials and manufacturing research. It has more than 80 industrial partners, including global giants such as Boeing, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems and Airbus as well as small businesses, and is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The Nuclear AMRC, established in 2009 includes Areva, Westinghouse, Rolls-Royce, Tata Steel and Sheffield Forgemasters among its members. The AMRC Design Prototyping and Testing Centre offers engineering design and prototyping expertise and plays a key role in assuring safety and quality standards.

The AMRC Training Centre provides advanced apprenticeship and higher-level skills training, while the Knowledge Transfer Centre is a dedicated meeting, conference and training hub CTI develops new castings technologies, in addition to providing design and manufacturing consultancy services and producing specialist castings. Facilities will soon include the biggest titanium melting furnace in Europe. NAMTEC provides training and consultancy services to the manufacturing supply chain and the Medical AMRC brings together a dedicated team focusing on healthcare technology. Factory 2050 is the latest AMRC project. It will be the UK’s first totally reconfigurable factory and will develop ways of meeting rising demand for high variation and mass customisation manufacturing.

The AMRC is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The Environmental, Health, Safety and Quality department is responsible for overseeing the processes and practices employed across the Nuclear AMRC. This includes supporting a systematic approach, through a documented system, to ensure the highest levels of quality, safety, environmental and information security performance are achieved. Reporting directly to the Environmental, Health, Safety and Quality Manager, the role principally involves governance and assurance by maintaining and further developing the documented system and facilitating appropriate improvement activities.

The successful candidate will ideally have a good honours degree (or equivalent experience), as well as substantial experience in systematic management of processes, with an understanding of their compliance to international standards. Key attributes will be a natural desire to drive improvements, an inventive and innovative approach to dealing with a variety of issues and problems, a practical and methodical way of working and good interpersonal skills. An understanding of the UK nuclear industry would be advantageous. Applicants are required to meet the criteria of HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard.
