Job Purpose:

New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) Context

  • The Staffing South Africa's Universities Framework (SSAUF) is a national and sector response towards addressing challenges in the South African Higher Education system in respect of size, composition and capacity of its academic staff.
  • The SSAUF intends to identify and nurture academic talent early in the academic development trajectory, and to support newly recruited academics to develop teaching expertise; develop research skills, including scientific publication skills.
  • The new generation of academics programme (nGAP), comprising one element of the SSAUF, involves the recruitment of highly capable scholars as new academics.
  • Appointment within the nGAP programme will be made such that staff equity targets are met, with preference to black and/or women South African citizens.

The purpose of this post is to support the department in pursuit of its academic objectives which include: teaching according to a set syllabus; undertake research and innovation; contribute to curriculum development and design; engage in work integrated learning, and service learning activities.

The successful candidate will be developed to be a future academic at CPUT capable of teaching on the Diploma and BTech Programme within the subject areas: Water engineering, Civil Engineering Materials and participating in research in the Flow Process and Rheology Centre (FPRC) as part of a team.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • At least a Master’s degree Vertical qualification in Civil Engineering
  • Interest in further post-graduate studies in non-Newtonian fluid mechanics/rheology/engineering materials
  • Interest in the field of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics/rheology

Recommendations

  • At least two (2) years relevant teaching experience and/or two (2) years industrial experience
  • Appropriate industrial/research experience in Civil Engineering
  • Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa

Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

Post nGAP induction phase:

  • Participation in all components of the nGAP development programme during the first 6 years of employment
  • Lecturing on the Civil Engineering programs
  • Develop learning materials for programs
  • Supervise and mentor students
  • Contribute to research outputs through participation in research activities of the FPRC
  • Assistance with departmental administration
  • Liaison with industry

Competencies

Post nGAP induction phase:

  • Demonstrable lecturing ability
  • Understanding of good assessment practices
  • Competent in conducting research and writing scientific outputs
  • Computer literacy with good organisational and time management skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of the latest technology and developments in the field of Civil Engineering
  • Proficient in English (written and spoken)
