We are offering an exciting three year post as Research Fellow for Medical Devices and Vulnerable Skin Network, dedicated to the provision of technologies to optimise the safety of functional medical devices. This includes assessing existing and developing new medical device materials and designs, as well as incorporating technologies for intelligent sensing within devices to promote self-management. The medical devices of interest relate specifically to those attached to the skin surface, for example interventional respiratory masks, prosthetics for amputees and support surfaces routinely used in healthcare practice. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a team of leading multidisciplinary academics from institutions within the UK, including partners Kings’ College London and University of Nottingham, and oversees.

The role involves close collaborative work with industry and healthcare professionals. You will be expected to work with existing partners and create new partnerships in the medical device sector.   You will also play a pivotal role in adopting both experimental and computational approaches to develop proof of scientific concepts for new medical devices. You will also be expected to identify pathways to translation working directly with the healthcare sector and regulatory bodies.

The ideal candidate will want to pursue a long-term career in academia or the healthcare industry. This opportunity will provide the scope to build a valuable network of contacts and expertise in the medical device sector with close mentorship to develop your own funding applications.

You must be able to work independently, with the ability to proactively and effectively communicate across all our network collaborators. You should ideally have a PhD or equivalent in engineering or physical sciences, with post-doctoral experience in applying science/engineering in the development of medical devices. The ideal candidate will have skills in computational modelling and/or biomechanical and physiological experimental techniques. In general the candidate should present a strong desire to work in the bioengineering sciences. There will be considerable opportunity to travel to potential partners in the UK and overseas.

The position will be based in a new Clinical Academic Facility based at Southampton General Hospital, which houses two research testing labs and a biological Class 2 laboratory. The multidisciplinary team includes academics from engineering, medical imaging and healthcare sciences working in close collaboration with clinicians from the acute hospital and community settings.
