We are looking to recruit a researcher to work on a research project exploring the changing work-residence relations and meanings of homes through the lens of home-based workers. The WORKANDHOME project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) of the European Commission and aims to uncover and investigate ‘hidden’ work and economic activities based in people’s homes. You will work within Geography and Environment at the University of Southampton. The work will also involve collaboration with partners at the ILS Dortmund (Germany) and Utrecht University. Using a qualitative research design, the project explores social practices of working in the own home or in other coworkers’ homes. It also investigates the housing and neighbourhood contexts of home-based workers, in particular how these have shaped work decisions and how locally embedded these workers and their activities are.

You will be a strong qualitative researcher with a background in human geography or a cognate discipline and a detailed knowledge of qualitative social science methods, particularly in face-to-face interview techniques and the use of qualitative data analysis software and tools (e.g. NVivo, ATLAS.ti). It is also envisaged that visual methods are used in this project to better understand housing practices and the use of neighbourhood resources in relation to homeworking. Experience in visual methods would be advantageous. You will be involved in assisting and then leading aspects of social media text analysis and field data collection.

You will have a first degree and a PhD* (or equivalent qualifications and experience) in Human Geography or a cognate social science. Those who have who are close to completion of a PhD in a relevant disciplines are encouraged to apply.  You will have demonstrable experience in the collection and analysis of qualitative data. The project is highly interdisciplinary and as such there is flexibility to accommodate expertise from a range of cognate disciplinary backgrounds (e.g. sociology, town planning, management etc.).

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The position is tenable from 1 September 2016 or soon after for a period of 21 months. Informal enquiries and requests for further details may be made to Dr Darja Reuschke (D.Reuschke@southampton.ac.uk).
