The Sheffield Institute for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies (SIIBS) is one of the world's leading research institutes in Biblical Studies. Our cutting edge research explores ancient texts in dynamic and engaging ways and our academics work across the University to ensure that our research is truly interdisciplinary. Our latest projects will let you explore a wide range of topics including Biblical and Qur'anic Studies; the New Testament and its Greco-Roman background; Contextual Biblical Studies (Reading Texts with Communities and Community Engagement); Social Memory; Disputed Paulines; Bible and the Arts; Philosophy of Religion; Philosophical engagement with biblical texts; history of ideas; translation studies; embodied religion; early Judaism; the Bible and contemporary popular culture; the Bible, sexual violence and rape culture.

Research at SIIBS

Our research has been ranked in the top three in the UK and is recognised for its breadth and diversity, spanning ancient and contemporary issues from biblical languages, politics and philosophy to forced migration, popular culture and gender studies
We currently have doctorates grouped in the following themes, which include international research collaborations. All our staff are actively involved in research projects and activities, and we can offer research supervision across a wide range of subjects including:
- Biblical literacy
- Reception histories of biblical texts
- Postcolonial readings and contexts
- Cultural studies (representations of biblical narratives in the visual arts, film, television and advertising)
- Religion, conflict and the media
- Sociological, literary and political approaches to biblical texts
- Gender, Sexualities and the Bible

We're interested in a variety of innovative and interdisciplinary research methods, and can offer supervision across a wide range of methodological and theoretical approaches. We welcome students who want to use both qualitative and quantitative methods in their studies.

The PhD Programme

You'll be joining an internationally recognised research school in the discipline, with the provision of high quality supervision and research training in a lively and supportive environment.
