Research Associate in Modelling Phenolic Resin Composites

The Role

The Composite Systems Innovation Centre (CSIC) at the University of Sheffield is actively seeking to develop its capability in theoretical and experimental composite science and technology. We have recently received funding from several sources to significantly expand the number and scope of research projects concentrating on predicting the properties of both polymers and polymer composites. As part of this, we are looking for a talented postdoctoral researcher to further develop a model to predict properties of phenolic resin and phenolic resin composites. The project is funded by UK Ministry of Defence via the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL). The objective is to develop an existing model for the prediction of phenolic resin properties to account for the effect of absorbed moisture. The project will use Group Interaction Modelling which has recently proven very effective at predicting the properties of such homogeneous, amorphous, isotropic, cross-linked polymers. While the project is primarily theoretical in nature, some experiments will also be performed to parameterise the model and validate predictions. The work is part of a wider expansion of the CSIC modelling effort so you will be supported by other group members with similar research interests.

 

Requirements

You will have (or be close to completion of) a PhD in a suitable subject area (engineering or science).Experience of polymer modelling or programming scientific software is desirable but not essential. Similarly, familiarity with mechanical properties and polymer science is desirable but not essential. You will have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and will present your work to both industrial and academic audiences via oral presentations, reports, posters and high quality journal papers. You will be eager to learn new skills, adapt to challenging situations and work as part of an active team.

 

The CSIC is a partnership between the Departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sheffield. The centre’s research portfolio consists of innovative research in both composites and polymers including smart composite materials, multi-scale modelling of polymers and composites, lower environmental impact composites and advanced composite materials. CSIC is part of ‘Composites at Sheffield’ along with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing.
