Job Purpose:

New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) Context

  • The Staffing South Africa's Universities Framework (SSAUF) is a national and sector response towards addressing challenges in the South African Higher Education system in respect of size, composition and capacity of its academic staff.
  • The SSAUF intends to identify and nurture academic talent early in the academic development trajectory, and to support newly recruited academics to develop teaching expertise; develop research skills, including scientific publication skills.
  • The new generation of academics programme (nGAP), comprising one element of the SSAUF, involves the recruitment of highly capable scholars as new academics.
  • Appointment within the nGAP programme will be made such that staff equity targets are met, with preference to black and/or women South African citizens.


The purpose of this post is to support the department in pursuit of its academic objectives which include: teaching according to a set syllabus; undertake research and innovation; contribute to curriculum development and design; engage in work integrated learning, and service learning activities.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A Bachelor's degree with English as major
  • A Master's degree with relevance to the teaching of English
  • At least two (2) years experience teaching English at school level
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

 

Recommendations:

  • A relevant teaching qualification
  • A Doctoral degree
  • At least two (2) years' experience lecturing English at tertiary level or at least five (5) years' experience in teaching English Home Language and First Additional Language at school
  • Tertiary experience in teaching the methodology of English Home Language and/or First Additional Language
  • Knowledge of recent developments in language teaching and learning and of national language curriculum and language policies in South Africa
  • Knowledge of and experience in teaching of children's literature at tertiary level
  • Interest or further study in one of the following: drama/media/language or linguistics
  • Evidence of research outputs
  • Experience in evaluating teaching practice
  • Willingness to fulfill other responsibilities deemed necessary in GET


Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

Post nGAP induction phase:

  • Participation in all components of the nGAP development programme during the first 6 years of employment
  • Teaching English Home Language and First Additional language
  • Teaching the methodology of English Home Language and First Additional language
  • Academic and curriculum development of language for the GET phase
  • Evaluation of students on teaching practice
  • Academic administration
  • Research in the field of language education
