UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN

PROGRAMME MANAGER South African Actuaries Development Programme (SAADP) Faculty of Commerce

The South African Actuaries Development Programme (SAADP) is an independent, non-profit organisation. The programme seeks to actively address the problem of the acute shortage of actuarial skills in the black community in South Africa. We do this by unearthing and harnessing mathematical and analytical skills amongst black students in order to expose and help them to capitalise on career opportunities in the field of Actuarial Science. We create greater awareness, understanding and appreciation of Actuarial Science as a field of study. The Programme is in operation at several major South African Universities.

UCT invites applications for the position of SAADP Programme Manager at UCT. This is a permanent position for appointment from the earliest available date. The Programme Manager reports to the CEO of SAADP in South Africa, and also to the Head of the Actuarial Science Section at UCT. You should be dynamic, innovative, adaptable and hardworking and be prepared to take responsibility across a range of functions. You should also at least be in possession of NQF8 level of qualification. Note that the qualification need not cover technical actuarial subjects, but may for example be in the areas of education, psychology or mathematical education in order to prepare one for the organization, motivation and counseling of students, many of whom may be from disadvantaged backgrounds. Experience of working with students at a tertiary level would be advantageous.

Requirements include:

  • Proficiency in the English language, both written and oral. Proficiency in other official South African languages will be an advantage.

  • A minimum of an NQF level 8 qualification
  • A minimum of three years relevant experience
  • A demonstrated interest in student development
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure
  • Good interpersonal, report compiling and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate at different levels within SAADP, the university and the actuarial field.

Responsibilities include:

  • Organizing SAAPD students’ orientation programme
  • Organizing and supervising SAADP students’ tutorials
  • Monitoring the students’ academic performance and reporting on student progress
  • Providing on-going holistic counseling to students on the programme; addressing academic and psycho social issues and referring students on to specialized help if necessary.
  • Participating in the recruitment of students and promotion of the programme
  • Carrying out research related to the students’ development which will inform future strategic programme decisions
  • Maintaining stakeholder relations – including strong links with the Education Development Unit and the actuarial science section
  • Preparing and maintaining the SAADP operational budget for the UCT site
  • Keeping statistics and records to facilitate future decisions
  • Providing Head Office with documentation required for funding
  • The general co-ordination of the programme will involve regular meetings with the students, both individually and in groups
