Job Details

The Industrial Doctorate Centre (IDC) in Machining Science is a unique collaboration between industry, the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and the Faculty of Engineering. Since the IDC’s launch in 2011, the EPSRC has awarded us £3.8M (matched with further funding from the University, AMRC and industry sponsors) to train 60 PhD and EngD Research Engineers, to help meet the high demand for research expertise in Machining Science.

We offer:

  • Four year fully funded postgraduate research degree – PhD or EngD.
  • Competitive tax-free stipend of £18,000 per year, with all academic fees paid.
  • Individually tailored training covering personal and professional development, science and technical training, plus skill building mini-research projects.
  • A launch pad for a rewarding career in high value manufacturing or academic research.

About Machining Science in the High Value Manufacturing (HVM) sector

Machining Science is the application of engineering theories to improve the machining of metals, alloys and composite materials. It covers most operations where material is removed as part of the production process (e.g. hole generation, turning and finishing), and incorporates many science and engineering disciplines, including mechanical engineering, materials science, physics, mathematics and control systems.

Machining Science is a vital research area for companies in the HVM sector (e.g. automotive, aerospace, medical engineering). The sector faces huge challenges, such as the difficulty of machining complex components from high performance (hence difficult to machine) materials, the cost of energy and raw materials, environmental sustainability, and the threat of international competition. Our industry sponsors represent all parts of the HMV supply chain from materials suppliers to aircraft manufacturers. Current EngD project sponsors include: Boeing, Messier-Bugatti-Dowty, Rolls-Royce, Sandvik Coromant, Bremont, Element Six, Hexagon Metrology and Carpenter Technology.

Programme description

Students join as an annual cohort on 1st September. In year one, students follow a programme of personal and professional skills development, plus taught courses in appropriate science and technical disciplines. This training underpins three mini-research projects, where students explore the scope of their main research problem, and formulate their individual research questions, which will be addressed in years two onwards.

Entry requirements

The PhD and EngD are demanding degrees and we require a 1st, good 2:1 or Masters with Merit in mechanical engineering, materials science, applied mathematics, physics or other relevant discipline as specified in the project description. Please note that there are residency eligibility criteria for EPSRC projects.

How to apply

Projects are advertised individually on the IDC website and findaphd.com, and you apply directly for the project that interests you. Projects for next September start are usually announced in batches between October and March, so we recommend that you check our vacancies web pages regularly.
