As part of the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Doctoral Training Centre (DTC@Sheffield) offers research training to support postgraduate research students at all stages of their work. Opportunities to access training at the University of Leeds and the University of York are also available as part of the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre (WRDTC) provision. The DTC facilitates networking between students and provides training in generic, advanced and transferable skills. There is a vibrant and expansive research community which produces doctoral graduates with outstanding skills and flexibility.

The Department of Economics.

Driven by a desire to conduct research that has a real impact, the University of Sheffield's Department of Economics is grounded in the principles of academically robust research with a civic purpose. On top of this our academics have significant industry expertise as well as connections to government agencies, making the research of the department highly informed and policy relevant.

The research in the department falls broadly across four groups. In labour and education economics our work is concerned with a wide range of issues, from job search and unemployment to the labour market impact of qualifications, and the match between the demand and supply of skills. The health economics and the economics of wellbeing group are concerned primarily with the measurement and valuation of health outcomes. In the economics of the firm and industrial economics, our research covers topics such as corporate governance, executive compensation, corruption, and regulation of firms. Finally the macroeconomics, finance and development group cover an extensive area including globalisation, inflation and monetary policy. The department is keen to attract applicants with innovative proposals in the areas mentioned, with a full list of the specialisms available for research supervision on the website.

The department is also home to a lively and welcoming graduate school, which has strong sense of community and an excellent support network, form both peers and academics. Alongside this there are a series of departmental research seminars that offer excellent opportunities to network and share your research.

The department is also very successful in securing funding for PhD scholarships; receiving grants from both the university and externally; these are competitive and subject to availability.
