As part of The Faculty of Social Sciences, the Doctoral Training Centre (DTC@Sheffield) offers research training to support postgraduate research students at all stages of their work. Opportunities to access training at the University of Leeds and the University of York are also available as part of the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre (WRDTC) provision. The DTC facilitates networking between students and provides training in generic, advanced and transferable skills. There is a vibrant and expansive research community which produces doctoral graduates with outstanding skills and flexibility.

 

Town and Regional Planning.

Town and Regional Planning at The University of Sheffield is a world leading department, defined by its social sciences approach to the discipline and it's civic and impact driven research. With a top 5 position in the Reasearch Excellence Framework 2014, the department has an outstanding reputation worldwide for its innovative approach to the discipline. With an extensive area of expertise, and an approach to the study that goes beyond the traditional understandings and methods of planning, the department is able to offer expert research supervision.

Able to supervise research focussed on any area of the world, applicants with innovative proposals, from a range of social sciences backgrounds, be it planning or otherwise, are encouraged to apply. Particular strengths in the department are: governance and citizen participation, theory and practice of planning, values ethics and justice in planning and development, environmental policy and politics, urban and regional development, urban social policy, housing and property markets, spatial policy, economic development and regeneration, as well as wider international development and urban issues in the Global South. All of this is underpinned by a wide range of methodological and theoretical approaches to the study. We welcome applicants using either qualitative or quantitative methods.

With an excellent staff student ratio and academics that are committed to providing the highest quality supervision, the department prides itself on its friendly and inclusive postgraduate community. Alongside this there are a series of well-established research clusters in the department, as well as many PhD student led opportunities to share and present research findings.
The department is very successful in securing funding for PhD scholarships; these are competitive and subject to availability.
