Department of Archaeology

The Department is one of the largest in the UK and we play a leading role in the development of the subject as a modern discipline.
Our philosophy is to develop archaeological research by drawing upon the integrated strengths of the arts and humanities, and the natural and physical sciences in an interdisciplinary manner. Ours is a truly international study environment, in the heart of one of the best student cities in the UK.

Our Graduate School's outstanding reputation ensures that Sheffield frequently has visiting overseas staff and researchers. Our postgraduate community is vibrant and diverse and we currently have around 60 graduate students carrying out PhD research. At our weekly research seminars staff, graduate students and visiting speakers present their research in a friendly and lively atmosphere. The department's facilities are recognised as being amongst the best in the UK, and include specialist osteology, environmental and material culture laboratories, as well as dedicated PhD study spaces.

Our staff research interests and areas of expertise are global and range from early hominoids and the Palaeolithic to the early modern world. Our research involves collaborations with colleagues in the UK, Europe, Asia, Africa and North America and covers issues from human evolution, the origins of agriculture, the growth of empires, the European Reformation to the beginnings of industrialistion.

We offer supervision around the following broad clusters:

  • Human, Plant and Animal Populations
  • Archaeomaterials and Ancient Technologies
  • Landscapes and Environments
  • Political, Social and Economic Diversity
