Job Details

JOB PURPOSE:

To undertake research in line with the School’s research strategy, to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to contribute to School administration/outreach activity.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:

  • Deliver teaching and assessment activities including lectures, seminar, tutorials, setting/marking coursework, to undergraduates and postgraduates, including specialist courses in Ancient History and the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.
  • Demonstrable ability to contribute to the teaching of both Greek and Roman history courses as directed.
  • Use appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
  • Plan and develop independent teaching contributions and contribute to the revision of course units.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and the enhancement of teaching quality within subject, School, Faculty and University.


 

Research:

  • Develop and plan an area of personal research and expertise in the field of Ancient History.
  • Sustain a track record of published research findings relevant to stage in career by publishing in refereed journals and presenting at national/international conferences.
  • Provide guidance to other staff and students on own specialist area.
  • Develop research collaborations with colleagues in other institutions.
  • Contribute to research grant applications to external funding bodies as appropriate.
  • Supervise Postgraduate Research students on own specialist area.

 

Administration/Contribution to the Community: 

  • Carry out designated routine School administrative duties, including, for example, committee work, course administration etc.
  • Provide pastoral care for students within own subject area to ensure that all issues are dealt with in a timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
  • Be responsible for the record–keeping associated with teaching and the preparation of teaching materials.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach strategy by developing external links.

 

Planning and Organising:

  • Plan research objectives over a number of years.
  • Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with Head of School/mentor.
  • As module leader, co-ordinate with others (such as support staff or academic colleagues) to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
  • Design/update modules in line with School’s teaching strategy.
  • Plan and prepare research papers to meet publication deadlines.

 

Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Manage own teaching, research, resources and administrative demands under general supervision of Head of School.
  • Mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development.
  • Support students in the capacity of personal tutor.
  • Assist in the development of skills and competence of others.
  • Use teaching and research resources as required.
  • Act as mentor to research staff and teaching assistants as required.

 

Internal and External Relationships:

  • Communicate complex and conceptual ideas to students and peers using relevant skills and a range of media.
  • Membership of School Board and Examination Board and such other committees as are relevant to administrative duties.
  • Participate in and develop networks, for example to identify sources of funding, contribute to student recruitment, market the institution, facilitate outreach work, generate income, or build relationships for future activities.
  • Collaborate with other academics within and beyond the School.
  • Contribute to development of external links or networks to share information and ideas and build relationships for future activities.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach programme.
  • Contribute to School’s undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment activities.

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Primary degree in Ancient History or a related subject.
  • PhD in Ancient History or a related subject. A research specialism in Ancient History and research interests that are sustainable and which complement the research strengths and strategy of the School of History and Anthropology.
  • A sustained publication record, appropriate to stage of career, of articles in peer reviewed/refereed journals or other high quality publications of a standard submissable to REF.
  • Experience of teaching at University level appropriate to stage of career.
  • Demonstrable ability to contribute to the teaching of courses in both Greek and Roman history as required.
  • Demonstrable ability to carry out administrative duties appropriate to post.
  • Contribution to a wider range of community / outreach activities.
  • High level of analytical capability.
  • Evidence of additional scholarly activity e.g. conference papers, external funding, book reviews, impact activities, collaborations.
  • Ability to communicate complex information succinctly and clearly.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work outside normal office hours if necessary.

 

 

 

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Demonstrable ability to generate external research income.
  • Experience in lecturing and examining at university level.
  • Experience of teaching at postgraduate level.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Please note that the School of History and Anthropology will merge with the School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy on 1 August 2016. The new School name will be School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics.
