JOB PURPOSE:

This postdoctoral research position has a key role in the ECIT Centre for Data Science and Scalable Computing, a team of scientists developing new methods on computer vision, machine learning and artificial intelligence. In particular, the research fellow will be a crucial player in the development of novel research, planning and delivery of the research activity within the project “Multi-activity 3D pose estimation on real environments” (http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/N030540/1), so that the overall research objectives of the project/school are met.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • To undertake research under supervision within the project “Multi-activity 3D pose estimation on real environments”.
  • Design, develop and refine algorithms and methodologies in the field of video surveillance, pose estimation, human behaviour analysis and activity recognition.
  • Design and carry out experiments, analyses, critical evaluations, and interpretations, determining the most appropriate
  • methodologies to test hypotheses and identify suitable alternatives if technical problems arise.
  • Present regular progress reports on research to members of the research group or to external audiences to disseminate and publicise research findings.
  • Prepare, often in consultation with supervisor, material for publication in international journals and presentations at international conferences.
  • Read academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of developments in own specialism and related disciplines.


Planning and Organising:

  • Plan own day-to day activity within framework of the agreed research programme and demonstrate capacity for independent research and self-management.
  • Plan up to a year in advance to meet deadlines for journal publications and to prepare presentations and papers for conferences.
  • Plan for specific aspects of research project. Timescales range from 1-6 months in advance and contribute to the research project planning.
  • Coordinate and liaise with other members of the research group over work progress.


Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research.


Internal and External Relationships:

  • Liaise on a regular basis with project leader, colleagues and students.
  • Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration.
  • Join external networks to share information and ideas.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, industries etc.
