Job Details
Applications are accepted for a PhD project in the area of hybrid manufacturing employing laser direct fabrication (LDF) using engineered metals and advanced machining. The project objectives are as follows: i) investigate and optimize the LDF technology for processing of nano-phase and amorphous powders and/or refining the powder microstructure “on the fly”; ii) design and validate post processing technologies for improving the surface integrity of the LDF components; iii) investigate and validate advanced machining technologies for producing net shape components while retaining the material microstructure of LDF components; (iv) develop the necessary monitoring, characterization and inspection techniques for determining the properties and quality of metals and structures produced by LDF with engineered metal powders and their follow up machining.
It is likely that the research activities will involve industrial collaboration and relevance.
The Advanced Manufacturing Technology Centre in the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham carries out internationally leading research in advanced manufacture, focusing on high value manufacturing and the associated knowledge-based technologies – laser processing, intelligent robotics, micro engineering, nanotechnology, non-conventional machining, etc. To carry out this research the Centre benefits from well-equipped laboratories particularly in material removal processes, laser processing, robotics and surface metrology that are complemented by the additive manufacturing and characterization equipment of Metallurgy and Materials and Chemical Engineering Schools and the new MTC facilities.
Funding Notes
For excellent applicants (very good first degree), there is the potential for funding for Home (UK) / EU students that will cover fees and a stipend of £14,400 un-taxed. Overseas students are welcome to apply but should note that they will be required to be either completely self-funding, or if awarded a scholarship, they should be able to pay for their living expenses.
