Trigger for the ATLAS Upgrade

The aims of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider are study rare processes and search for new physics at the proton-proton energy frontier. The trigger system, which selects which collisions to read out for analysis, is central to the success of the experiment. To cope with the increasing demands of high luminosity LHC operation a two stage upgrade programme is planned. This project will involve contributing to the design of the trigger upgrade, through studies of the optimal trigger algorithms for the two phases, and possibly development of software for the Phase I trigger. The candidate will also take part in analysis of ATLAS data within one of the group’s main areas of interest (currently Higgs searches and studies and heavy flavour physics). Travel to CERN will be required, with the possibility of an extended stay in Geneva during the studentship.
