Utilizing the technologies of Flow Cytometry, Molecular Pathology, Immunochemistry, Mass Spectroscopy and Genomics, the Translational Molecular Biomarkers (TMB) is responsible for clinical biomarkers in all therapeutic areas and in all phases of clinical development at Merck Research Laboratories. Candidate should have a strong interest in Translational Sciences.

The individual will have the following responsibilities:

- Lead a group of senior scientists in the development and validation of tissue-based assays, primarily Immunohistochemistry assays.
- Train and continuously develop biomarker scientists.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in Immunohistochemistry and other tissue-based assays development and fit-for-purpose validation.
- Serve as biomarker lead for programs in all therapeutic areas, especially in ImmunoOncology.
- Interface with scientists in Discovery and Clinical Development in the execution of biomarker strategies.
- Execute and coordinate the development and fit-for-purpose validation of Immunohistochemistry and other tissue-based assays within TMB and outside laboratories.
- Execute and coordinate the analysis of clinical samples within TMB and outside laboratories.
- Write memos, final reports and publications summarizing data.
- Write, update and provide training on laboratory SOPs.
- Work on improvement processes within Molecular Pathology, such as enhancement of the group’s quantitative image analysis capabilities and multiplexed analyses.

Qualifications

Education:

- Required: Ph.D, MS, or BA/BS degree in a Life Science field (i.e. Biochemistry, Immunology, etc.)
- Preferred: An MD or DVM with United States Board Certification in Anatomical Pathology

Required:

- At least 10 years (Ph.D.), 15 years (MS) or 20 years (BA/BS) of academic or industry experience in tissue-based assay development and validation.
- Proven scientific/leadership expertise
- Demonstrated strong record of scientific achievement (publications, patents, etc.)
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
- Be able to work independently; strong leadership skills
- Ability to execute within a matrixed organization

Preferred:

- Knowledge of drug development process and translational medicine.
- Industry experience
- Experience in clinical development/operation or managing the implementation of biomarker assays in support of drug development.
- Project management experience interfacing with discovery, clinical development and operational teams.
