Lead Institute / Faculty:   Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton

Main Supervisor: GRAHAM PACKHAM

Other members of the supervisory team: HYWEL MORGAN, FRANCESCO FORCONI, EDD JAMES, TIM ELLIOTT

Duration of the award: 4 YEARS

Project description:

We have an opportunity for a PhD student to join the Doctoral Training Partnership in Translational Immunology with a project offered in the area of development of microfluidic devices for analysis of single-cell signalling responses in human malignant B cells.

Programme Structure

Year 1

In year 1 you will choose three laboratory rotation projects, which will give you the opportunity to work with our research groups who are at the cutting edge of translational immunology.  Laboratory rotations are supplemented with taught modules in Statistical Methods and Quantitative Cell Biology, which includes a hands-on introduction to bioinformatics techniques and computational modelling, using large clinically-relevant datasets.  These will provide training required for the completion of the detailed research project in years 2-4.

You will receive an intermediate award of MRes after successful completion of the first year.  Please note the MRes is not offered for application separately.

Years 2-4

Years 2-4 comprises the MAIN research project “microfluidic devices for time-resolved quantification of single-cell signalling responses in human leukaemia and lymphoma”.

The main goals are to develop novel microfluidic devices which are capable of quantifying signalling responses in thousands of individual malignant B cells obtained from patients with lymphoma or leukaemia . Signalling analysis will be used to probe the biological features of B-cell cancers, and potentially to predict patient outcome. This project will provide training in biomedical engineering, imaging, cancer cells signalling and bioinformatics. The aim is for you to become an active and valued member of the research laboratory led by Professor Packham.
