CLINICAL ASSISTANT: PATHOLOGY (THREE-YEAR CONTRACT APPOINTMENT)

INTRODUCTION:

Applications are invited for the position of Clinical Assistant (Resident). This post is targeted at veterinarians who wish to specialise in Pathology. The successful applicant will join a team of qualified specialists working in a well-equipped academic environment in the discipline of Pathology.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating in the diagnostic services provided by the Section of Pathology;
  • Assisting with the diagnostic training of undergraduate students;
  • Participating in departmental research programmes and publications relevant to wildlife;
  • Contributing to the departmental community engagement activities;
  • Any other reasonable duties as delegated by the Section Head or Head of the Department;
  • Participating in the wildlife consultancy services of the Pathology Section, where applicable.


Please note: The incumbent will be obliged to register and pursue a MMedVet (Path) degree.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A BVSc/BVMCh or equivalent degree;
  • An average of at least 60% in Pathology during undergraduate veterinary training and/or at Honours-level;
  • Registered or eligible to register as a veterinarian with the South African Veterinary Council;
  • One year work experience post qualification;
  • Evidence of specific interest in veterinary pathology of wildlife.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Compliance with entry requirements for a Masters’ programme with a commitment to enrol for an MMedVet degree;
  • Computer literacy (Windows, MS Office, internet);
  • Out-of-hours availability for rotational diagnostic services;
  • Good language and communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team (relate to students, colleagues and supervisors).

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Experience and/or appropriate postgraduate training in Pathology;
  • Exposure to diagnostic pathology;
  • Research in veterinary pathology.

 

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
